Hostal Don Alfonso is ideally located in Arenal, Puerta del Sol. You cannot do better for your money at 55 Euros per night for a double room with its own bathroom. It is ideally situated and surrounded by shops, restaurants and other attractions. The Palace and Opera are literally down the road. The staff are helpful and the Hostal is... More

A clean, safe, central and good value hotel. It doesn't have much character, and is on the second floor (there is a lift). But on the plus side the staff are friendly and helpful and speak English, it is very central, and frankly why pay more? Good wifi and air con.

The hostel located near Sol, the heart of the city. Tourists spots were within walking distance. Restaurants, coffee shop, shopping outlets were right in front of the doorstep. Price, suitable for budget travelers. Service, good but not everyone speaks English, quite challenging to communicate with the hostel personnel.

Price-quality perfect little hostel in the very heart of Madrid. Only small problem was the toilet needed about 10 min. to refill the water but when you'r away all day this isnt much of a problem. I will get back here soon !!

Staying in Centro

Neighborhood Profile
Expansive plazas, local and foreign crowds, street performers, colorful lights, window shopping, restaurant signs promising the best paella, ham, and churros con chocolate- this is downtown Madrid, a collection of plazas interconnected by a network of side streets. Some of these side streets are wide pedestrian shopping routes, and some are hidden, so it's possible to duck in and out of the bustle as desired. The iconic Puerta del Sol is the giant crossroads of the city and a must-see attraction at any time of the day. The nearby Plaza Mayor, completely enclosed by historic red buildings, is an ideal place to grab a bite to eat outside, amidst scores of tables and people out for a stroll. Plaza Isabel II (also known as “Opera”) is smaller and a good meeting spot, and the stately Plaza del Oriente is the front yard of the Royal Palace. Centro can be touristy (pickpockets are unfortuately not unheard-of here), crowded, and sometimes gimmicky, but it is also the place to experience classic Madrid.
