We arrived around 11pm and I was worried we wouldn't be able to check in, but the owner was there waiting for us even at that late hour. She didn't speak any English, but spoke Spanish slowly and easily and we had no problem communicating. She was very easy-going and nice, and that was the only time I saw her... More

I arrived quite late in the evening following a late flight and had to buzz to get the housekeeper's attention. Whether it was because it was late or because we didn't share many words in a common language but the check-in process was mainly communicated with gestures and sign language. The housekeeper seemed quite stern and would be at home... More

Due to plane delay, I arrived hostel at midnight. It was ok if the hostel was alerted in advance. Since it was near SOL metro station, it was not difficult to find the hostel and travel around. At night, the stairs was quite dark. Using phone torch was enough to solve such problem. A bit noisy neighbour The soccer match between... More

I've been to Madrid many times and Hostal Murcia is one of the best. It's run by super-nice, helpful people, who will help you in any way possible. It's not possible to live more near the city centre and it has nice, clean and quiet rooms. But the best part are the owners who are very Spain-like: friendly, warm, helpful... More

Staying in Centro

Neighborhood Profile
Centro
Expansive plazas, local and foreign crowds, street performers, colorful lights, window shopping, restaurant signs promising the best paella, ham, and churros con chocolate- this is downtown Madrid, a collection of plazas interconnected by a network of side streets. Some of these side streets are wide pedestrian shopping routes, and some are hidden, so it's possible to duck in and out of the bustle as desired. The iconic Puerta del Sol is the giant crossroads of the city and a must-see attraction at any time of the day. The nearby Plaza Mayor, completely enclosed by historic red buildings, is an ideal place to grab a bite to eat outside, amidst scores of tables and people out for a stroll. Plaza Isabel II (also known as “Opera”) is smaller and a good meeting spot, and the stately Plaza del Oriente is the front yard of the Royal Palace. Centro can be touristy (pickpockets are unfortuately not unheard-of here), crowded, and sometimes gimmicky, but it is also the place to experience classic Madrid.
