Hostal La Macarena, adjacent to the Plaza Mayor at #8 Cava de San Miguel, is a sparkling-clean family-run hostal (don't let the word "hostal" keep you away - in Spain, it means a small hotel.) La Macarena has full-size rooms, each with private bath. Rooms are nicely decorated, with firm, comfortable beds, satellite TV, air-conditioning, and telephone. Although facing a... More

All the possitive reviews capture the charm of this small hostal in the best location in Madrid. The entrance to Plaza Major is steps away and so is Botin's (not to be missed) for dinner. True, it can be noisy so bring ear plugs but everything else is great.

Initial traffic anxiety left us on arrival, once we got the car close to the hostal ! Our navigation problem, not the Hostal. Excellent location - smallish but clean and comfortable double room with all systems working and daily service very good. Jose was a real plus and quietly very helpful. Location suited to the tourist and Hostal provided very... More

We stayed at La Macarena for 5 nights in May 2005. The hotel room was small, but very clean. It is located a couple steps away from Plaza Mayor, and about 3 minute walk to Puerta del Sol. Other tourist spots close by are El Palacio Real (about 8 min walk) and El Parque Del Moro (behind El Palacio Real).... More

Staying in Centro

Neighborhood Profile
Centro
Expansive plazas, local and foreign crowds, street performers, colorful lights, window shopping, restaurant signs promising the best paella, ham, and churros con chocolate- this is downtown Madrid, a collection of plazas interconnected by a network of side streets. Some of these side streets are wide pedestrian shopping routes, and some are hidden, so it's possible to duck in and out of the bustle as desired. The iconic Puerta del Sol is the giant crossroads of the city and a must-see attraction at any time of the day. The nearby Plaza Mayor, completely enclosed by historic red buildings, is an ideal place to grab a bite to eat outside, amidst scores of tables and people out for a stroll. Plaza Isabel II (also known as “Opera”) is smaller and a good meeting spot, and the stately Plaza del Oriente is the front yard of the Royal Palace. Centro can be touristy (pickpockets are unfortuately not unheard-of here), crowded, and sometimes gimmicky, but it is also the place to experience classic Madrid.
