The location is great - walkable distance from train station and very close to a metro station. After a long day of walking though, the last thing you want to do is climb 4 flights of rickety stairs to your room. The staff was friendly, but we only saw one employee at our time of check-in (we stayed 3 nights)... More

Pension Magdalena is an hotel on the third floor of a vintage building in the center of madrid. Me and my boyfriend just spent 4 days in this fantastic City and we are really satisfied with the place where we slept. Diego, the owner i guess, is a very Kind guy who helped us a lot in finding good and... More

This pension is near the very centre of Madrid (Puerta del Sol is less than 10 minutes walking); we paid €30/night a double with bathroom and air conditioning. Room was cleaned (and towels changed) daily during our staying, as in a normal hotel. The staff has been helpful and nice (a smile is always the best of introductions), although I... More

The building is a little old and there's no elevator but they will help you with all your lugagge. Rooms are very confortable and clean and have a mini split unit. Staff is very nice and helpful. Pharmacy and metro station are just about one minute from here.

I must admit I was impressed. May not look so good from the outside but the inside was impeccable. Clean, cheap, central located, welcoming and helpful staff. I spent 3 nights with my gf, they cleaned the room every day, gave us a map of the city, hairdryer, clean towels, shampoo etc. Fast and free wifi. 15 min walk from... More

We also picked this lodging due to its location and price. At first sight we were very apprehensive, not being backpackers but a young married couple. Although we didn't inform PM of our arrival time, our room was quickly prepared 5 minutes after we arrived. For the price we paid, we were amazed to have daily cleaning (overall it was... More

In the context of the way we were traveling (looking for good price but willing to pay more for quality, not backpackers). This hostel was pretty poor, we arrived to no reception and had to phone someone for assistants, the place is very badly sign posted and in a block of flats on the four floor - we entered the... I stayed this hotel from 3 January till 10 January, 2012. My choice was made by two reasons: 1) by its perfect location at the city center; 2) by its rather low prices. In fact, these are the only but important virtues of this hotel. You need only 10-15 minutes of walk to get the well-known museums Prado and Thyssen-Bornemisza,... More

It was a very cheap solution and we chose it totally for the location it had to offer, right in the heart of Madrid, where all the other places were very close and at walking distance. Especially pleased about a number of bars, supermarkets and a gym nearby, along with Aston Martin metro station. The hotel is very average and... More

Staying in Lavapies

Neighborhood Profile
Lavapies
Walking into this neighborhood is like entering a different country ... except it's hard to tell which one it is. One side of Calle Lavapiés is lined with Indian restaurants, the other with kebab shops. Men in traditional African clothing convene outside their businesses for long chats, and people shout to each other across plazas and streets. Interspersed among ethnic specialty shops are independent theaters and dance studios, and two large arts and cultural centers — the beautiful Casa Encendida and the Tabacalera, a former tobacco factory — all of which attract young crowds. Along Calle Argumosa, the place to go for drinks, artists and art appreciators with piercings and dreadlocks convene in the street’s eclectic array of young, hip bars. Though some of the side streets can get a little seedy at night, Lavapiés is still the place to go for those seeking a unique blend of arts and culture in an international and funky neighborhood.
