Firstly, I have to agree with all the comments about how accomodating and pleasant the desk staff, particularly the head of reception, were. It really helps travelers feel comfortable in a foreign, sometimes intimidating city when they're dealing with a friendly, helpful staff. The layout of the lobby is very simple & "user-friendly," but simultaneously, elegant. The beds are comfortable,... More

We stayed here for 5 nights in June, and we loved it! The location could not be more perfect. The Palacio Real is a two minute walk away (we could actually see it from our window!). There are some great restaurants nearby (100 Montaditos is a ridiculously cheap lunch but there are some nicer cafes/restaurants across from the Palacio). Shopping... More

This is a perfect place for visiting the main sights of Madrid. It is ideally located within walking distance of most of the major attractions, e.g. 2 minutes from the Royal Palace, 5 minutes from Plaza Mayor, and if you don't enjoy walking the Madrid metro is cheap, clean and efficient. The hotel was spotlessly clean and the front desk... More

Hotels in Madrid are not cheap, so the wonderful rooms at the top of the Hotel Opera are a relative bargain - they come with a beautiful deck almost the size of the room itself with views of the rooftops of Madrid. We were very pleasantly stranded here during the Icelandic volcano eruption, our stay extended, the staff extremely courteous... More

When you arrive exhausted from travel, the people at the desk are VERY accomodating and all of a sudden you feel refueled. Very conveniently located, clean, and homey.

Small Boutique Modern Hotel, which is ticked all the boxes from a location, price and quality point of view. You are right in the centre of Madrid opposite the Opera House and beside the Royal Palace. Reception was well staffed by polite and helpful professionals. The bedroom reserved was a double and was modern and was set up as a... More

We would certainly recommend this hotel for a city trip to Madrid! The price/quality is very good! It is especially the location which makes this hotel worth a stay. You can walk to a lot of sightseeing spot, or take the metro (which is very easy in madrid). Staff is very friendly, and the rooms are clean and comfortable. As... More

I travelled to Madrid with my girlfriend in May 2010 and stayed at Hotel Opera. The hotel is centrally located and within easy reach of all the sights. Upon arrival the staff were kind enough to upgrade our room and were really friendly and helpful throughout our stay. In Madrid English isn´t as prevelant as in other parts of Spain,... More

We have just returned from 12days in Spain, we spent three nights here. Location: Excellant, you are 5minutes walk from either the Royal Palace or the Plaza Mayor shopping area...of of course directly behind the Opera House. Staff: We found the staff extremely friendly and helpful...the breakfast was good and always replenished, we booked the hotel directly and paid 99euros... More

Staying in Centro

Neighborhood Profile
Centro
Expansive plazas, local and foreign crowds, street performers, colorful lights, window shopping, restaurant signs promising the best paella, ham, and churros con chocolate- this is downtown Madrid, a collection of plazas interconnected by a network of side streets. Some of these side streets are wide pedestrian shopping routes, and some are hidden, so it's possible to duck in and out of the bustle as desired. The iconic Puerta del Sol is the giant crossroads of the city and a must-see attraction at any time of the day. The nearby Plaza Mayor, completely enclosed by historic red buildings, is an ideal place to grab a bite to eat outside, amidst scores of tables and people out for a stroll. Plaza Isabel II (also known as “Opera”) is smaller and a good meeting spot, and the stately Plaza del Oriente is the front yard of the Royal Palace. Centro can be touristy (pickpockets are unfortuately not unheard-of here), crowded, and sometimes gimmicky, but it is also the place to experience classic Madrid.
