This charming hotel is in a perfect location. The rooms are delightful and the general decor in the building is of a good standard. The rooftop swimming pool is adequate although it was a surprise when we saw how small it was. We soon adapted to this and luckily, the pool was never too busy. One member of the reception... More

I have stayed at three other Catalonia properties in Spain and have generally had fabulous experiences. The common spaces are crisp, clean, breezy and provide an instant sense of airiness and respite in the middle of a big city. Above all, the hotels offer a great value. The Catalonia Gran Via fell far short of my expectations. The lobby and... More

Easy check in, staff was pleasant. Room was comfortable and quiet. Hotel does seem a bit tired in decor. The breakfast was adequate, again nothing special. We booked a tour through the front desk. The next day we waited and waited for the tour bus but it never came. Long story short apparently the staff at the front desk never... More

Bit dusty hotel, needing a proper refurbishment. Room was ok, and everything is clean, but seriously out of date. The hotel is two buildings connected together, making the layout quite complex. Located on the Gran Via, which is not only an advantage. This is a very busy and noisy street.

The service was impeccable but the rooms we were offered were meant to be smoke free but they smelt very strongly of smoke. Neither of us smoked, so this was quite an awful smell to come home to I the heat. The room was otherwise a good average room.

For a few nights stay in Madrid where you just want a place to relax after a day of sightseeing and a bed to sleep on, this hotel is great. It's location is good, easy walking distance to a lot of the major sites. It's also about 3 mins walk from Gran Via metro. It's clean, staff are friendly and... More

The hotel was clean, room was well appointed and the daily room cleaning was among the most thorough I've ever experienced. The hotel bar was friendly and comfortable though more expensive than other places in the neighborhood. We really enjoyed having access to the rooftop pool. It is small and can get busy, with just 5 people it feels crowded.... More

Excellent reception and service in all around top notch hotel. Our suite on top floor offered amazing views of Gran Via as well as easy access to the roof top pool. The ambiance, decor, cleanliness and amenities were those of a 5 star establishment. Room service and breakfast were excellent, great value! Can't wait to go back.

I spent 3 nights at this hotel and it is clean, nice, old-fashioned, with great service, very good breakfast service (included in the room rate). You can walk to the most iconic places of Madrid like Museo del Prado, Museo Thyssen, Parque del Buen Retiro, la Puerta de Alcalá, la Plaza del Sol, etc.

Excellent hotel situated in an ideal location to visit all the city's main tourist locations. Staff were very helpful and spoke great English. Pool on the roof was small but perfect to have a dip to cool down and relax in the sun. Room was excellent.

Staying in Centro

Neighborhood Profile
Centro
Expansive plazas, local and foreign crowds, street performers, colorful lights, window shopping, restaurant signs promising the best paella, ham, and churros con chocolate- this is downtown Madrid, a collection of plazas interconnected by a network of side streets. Some of these side streets are wide pedestrian shopping routes, and some are hidden, so it's possible to duck in and out of the bustle as desired. The iconic Puerta del Sol is the giant crossroads of the city and a must-see attraction at any time of the day. The nearby Plaza Mayor, completely enclosed by historic red buildings, is an ideal place to grab a bite to eat outside, amidst scores of tables and people out for a stroll. Plaza Isabel II (also known as “Opera”) is smaller and a good meeting spot, and the stately Plaza del Oriente is the front yard of the Royal Palace. Centro can be touristy (pickpockets are unfortuately not unheard-of here), crowded, and sometimes gimmicky, but it is also the place to experience classic Madrid.
