Hostal Gala is a little trendy with its black and white interior, but look past that and you'll find an economical, quiet, clean adorable hostal. We had a room with a balcony, looking out on the plaza and LOVED it. We stayed 5 nights and were super happy the entire time. If you leave your window open - expect to... More

We stayed at Hostal Gala in October 2011 for 4 days, 3 nights at a rate of $100 per night. Overall, a positive experience for our first time in Madrid. Pros - rooms are clean and updated (if a little sparse) and can easily accommodate two travelers and their luggage. Beds are firm but still comfortable. Very convenient to 3... More

We stayed 5 nights in a triple room at Hostal Gala Madrid last May. The location was perfect, very close (less than a minute walk) to the metro station and right in the city centre. Our room was not very big but there was enoguh space for three people at the same time. We got everything what we expected: Modern... More

For a Saturday night in Madrid, you're not going to find a better deal in as good of a location. Great beds. Great shower. But very small rooms. And the walls are like tissue paper (and that might be an understatement).

Modern, decent-sized room and great location. Overall Hostal Gala is excellent value and we would stay again. The wifi was terrible although we were sometimes able to use the free wifi provided by the city as we overlooked the square/park next to the hotel. That's the only reason I'm bumping it down from a five as I deliberately chose somewhere... More

Could not recommend this place more - fantastic location central to everything you want to see and do in Madrid, attentive and helpful staff and immaculate rooms. Right near Sol and Opera subway stops. Stayed in a room with two singles (king size singles, very comfy) and offered plenty of space. Rooms are cleaned daily and the cleaning staff go... More

Stayed one night here in a small, but comfortable room. I really liked the modern decor, and the staff was friendly and helpful. (there is 24 hour reception as well). The best part about this place is the location. Very close to the Callao metro stop and a very short walk to all the major sights--Plaza del Sol & Gran... More

Pros: Good location, right next to a lively plaza and a two minute walk to Plaza Mayor and a really nice market. Room was clean with modern decor (sort of ikea style). Bathroom was really good, had a nice shower with all these weird different settings. Daily housekeeping and comfy beds, if not a little hard. Staff were helpful with... More

We are a family of 4 (2 young kids). We rented the apartment for 3 nights. Having a small kitchen and laundry was a nice bonus for a place that was not too expensive. Also having the space to spread out a bit after staying in some smaller properties in Europe was nice. The property is in a fabulous location... More

This is a great little property. Friends I was with found the rooms to be quite hot as the air conditioning wasnt up to much however they supplied a fan and were really keen to get the problem sorted. The property is clean and the decorations and beds are fantastic for this end of the market. I liked that it... More

Staying in Centro

Neighborhood Profile
Centro
Expansive plazas, local and foreign crowds, street performers, colorful lights, window shopping, restaurant signs promising the best paella, ham, and churros con chocolate- this is downtown Madrid, a collection of plazas interconnected by a network of side streets. Some of these side streets are wide pedestrian shopping routes, and some are hidden, so it's possible to duck in and out of the bustle as desired. The iconic Puerta del Sol is the giant crossroads of the city and a must-see attraction at any time of the day. The nearby Plaza Mayor, completely enclosed by historic red buildings, is an ideal place to grab a bite to eat outside, amidst scores of tables and people out for a stroll. Plaza Isabel II (also known as “Opera”) is smaller and a good meeting spot, and the stately Plaza del Oriente is the front yard of the Royal Palace. Centro can be touristy (pickpockets are unfortuately not unheard-of here), crowded, and sometimes gimmicky, but it is also the place to experience classic Madrid.
