Fairly inexpensive, with superb location. If you keep your window open you hear the traffic. Close it and turn AC on and there is no noise. Rooms were great and the staff extremely friendly. Willing to recommend or explain things about the city. Shops, restaurants, metro, all are close. Area is very safe.

Good location - one day I took a walk to one direction of Gran Via street and visited all the places of interest of Madrid of this side, and other day I took a walk to the other direction of the Gran Via and visited all the places of interest of Madrid. All these places are reachable by walking. The... More

I thought for sure this place would suck, but it was actually quite nice and very safe. Just 4 blocks from the center of Madrid, staff was very friendly and the rooms were very clean. Noise was an issue at times, but not as bad as I thought it would be (tip: bring ear plugs if sensitive to noise). All... More

If you plan to do mostly a lot of partying in Madrid, I recommend staying here. The walls are as thin as paper, so you can hear everything. It's very safe. You drop off your key at the front desk, and must ring the doorbell to re-enter. If you arrive after 11pm, you are given a special card stating that... More

Myself & my partner booked two nights at the Hostal Splendid on 1st February. The hostal is in a large old building which has multiple occupancy with other hostals & businesses. You need to take the lift & knock on the door to be let in. Our room, which was facing onto the main road (Gran Via) was very small... More

Staying in Centro

Neighborhood Profile
Centro
Expansive plazas, local and foreign crowds, street performers, colorful lights, window shopping, restaurant signs promising the best paella, ham, and churros con chocolate- this is downtown Madrid, a collection of plazas interconnected by a network of side streets. Some of these side streets are wide pedestrian shopping routes, and some are hidden, so it's possible to duck in and out of the bustle as desired. The iconic Puerta del Sol is the giant crossroads of the city and a must-see attraction at any time of the day. The nearby Plaza Mayor, completely enclosed by historic red buildings, is an ideal place to grab a bite to eat outside, amidst scores of tables and people out for a stroll. Plaza Isabel II (also known as “Opera”) is smaller and a good meeting spot, and the stately Plaza del Oriente is the front yard of the Royal Palace. Centro can be touristy (pickpockets are unfortuately not unheard-of here), crowded, and sometimes gimmicky, but it is also the place to experience classic Madrid.
