We had no reservations or plans for St Remy de Provence but were delighted to discover Gounod Hotel. We checked in for one night and stayed for 3. The lobby was very funky & decorated with lots of religious icons, these are because of owners admiration for composer Gounod who wrote operas here in the 1800s. not knowing what to... More

Five of us congregated from across Europe for one night before moving into our rental. The rooms were quirky but lovely. The pool is pretty and quiet. The staff are charming; the breakfast was brill. It's in the centre of one of the nicest towns in France and it doesn't cost an arm or a leg. Might offend atheists and... More

We came to stay for one night and stayed for two nights in a room off the beautiful garden with mature trees, and enjoyed the lovely atmosphere of this friendly hotel. We were given information on arrival of all there was to see locally, and tried some of the restaurants which were suggested and we were more than happy, and... More

First if you want a typical Americanized hotel this is not your place. It's funky clutter and lobby are fun if a little religious. The pool was very nice and the service excellent. Our room was up dark stairs but was warm, comfortable and interesting. We stayed there for two nights on a biking trip and its location in the... More

Once through the slightly gloomy and shrine-like entrance (haven't they heard about first impressions?) the place opens up into a lawned garden surrounded by rooms, with a pool at the end. Our room, No.51, was also a bit of a surprise: up some external steel steps to a small terrace with a table and two chairs, then into a gable... More

A very special hotel. You will like or hate the decoration. My husband and I did appreciate it, the kids didn't like it. The breakfast is good with a lot of fresh fruit. Their is a nice swimmingpool. The location is excellent. Value/money: We found it to expensive for what we got.

The sun is shining and we headed to our hotel in the center of Saint Remy called the Gounod Hotel named after the composer Gounod who wrote his opera here. After driving around the block several times we finally found the correct street, parked and checked into our hotel. At first glance the hotel lobby is off pudding, smells funny... More

2 of 5 stars Reviewed June 25, 2013

I booked into Hotel Gounod for three nights in the expectation of a quirky, eccentric, colourful hotel (as described in Alistair Sawday's guide) but I'm afraid we found the dark dreary public rooms filled with religious statuary very depressing, the lack of lighting hazardous and though breakfast was good, the surroundings felt grubby because of the predomination of black everything.... Stayed here in June and it was perfect! Rooms are beautifully decorated, our room was incredibly quiet with a beautiful balcony overlooking the courtyard. Very evident that the hotel is "loved" by it's owners. The location is absolutely perfect ... walking distance to everything and market day is at your doorstep. Breakfast was very nice, organic foods and service with... More
