Worst hostel i have ever visited. It smells horrible and the staff was even worse. The only good thing is the location but it is not worth it. Not recomendable at all. Find another place for your safety

As soon as I walked into the hostel there was an overpowering stench of urine and drains. It was only later that night that I saw the culprit a feral cat in the boiler room by the door next to our room. There was human faeces on the pipes next to the loo in the bathroom and even more to my dismay there were brown smudges on the wall next to our bed that also resembled faeces. It was the type of place you would see Gordon Ramsey visiting on hotel nightmares. One of my friends rooms didn’t even have a loo and when I looked out the window in our room I saw that a previous resident had actually disposed of there unclean undergarments onto the terrace just below. When the receptionist showed us our room it was unclear which beds were ours as the bedsheets looked used and unclean. Despite sending an email just before requesting that all three beds were in the same room which was assured was fine when we got there they said they were full and couldn’t do that and even more inferred that we were lying. All further correspondence with the hostel on their part has been in capital letters I really strongly advice that no one stays here I think even a homeless person would prefer to stay on the streets. We attempted to enter the neighbouring park but to our dismay it was locked. We ended up checking out early and staying in a hote down the road (Best Western So’co) which I would strongly recommend at only 20 euros more a night!!!

Where do I start firstly , the staff working there are very impolite and should not be working in customer service. I overheard numerous heated arguments not only between our group but also between staff and other residents. Secondly the stair case smells of piss , and the cleanliness of the rooms is appalling as we found rotten vegetables on top of the lockers. There is only ever hot water early in the morning, it is advertised as having a kitchen yet has no oven , very little kitchen utensils including 3 forks. The light fitting on our room also fell on my head , smashing and potentially almost giving me concussion. When we explained to the staff we got a simple “okay I see” and had to ask for a hover so that the peices of glass could be cleaned up.No apology was given and it was made out to be our fault.I have stayed in so many hostels , this has been the worst ever , I would never stay here again or recommend to anyone.

Not the best hostel we’ve stayed in. The room was fundamentally clean. Outside the hostel was intimidating to return to late at night though with a group of drunks outside, one of whom tried to tailgate into the hostel. On 3 occasions through the night someone tried to gain access to the private room we booked, which was very unnerving. The hostel is in a shared building - unfortunately the stairwell up to the hostel smells strongly of urine. Would absolutely not recommend this hostel to anyone travelling solo.

I read reviews before I stayed at hotel Altair and hoped they would not be true. Wrong! Terrible place. This is the truth! Stairs to hostel smell of urine. Unpleasent robotic customer service. Actually no customer service!. Rude and couldn't give a toss attitude from staff. The noise at night outside the hostel was so loud I couldn't sleep. 30 euros deposit for key. I've never paid that much anywhere else I've stayed. Really bad place. Should not be on booking . Com. Also, photo is of church opposite hotel not the hoval that the hostel is. Miss dissapointed.

This is without a doubt, the worst place I have ever experienced in years of travel. If I could give it negative stars, I would. I have always tried to find something positive in the places that I have stayed, but there simply is nothing positive to write here. I booked this through one of the partner sites for TripAdvisor. I received email confirmation and a voucher to present at the hostel. Nice was very busy for the holiday weekend, and I was pleased to have a place. When I arrived, a woman took her time to get to an area loosely describable as a front desk. I told her in English that I was there to check in. She answered in French and indicated she spoke no English. I began speaking in Spanish, also to no avail and then brought out Google translate. She was clearly irritated and walked away! Finally, she came back and claimed that there was no reservation! I showed the email and the voucher and she indicated (now in English!) that they would not honor the voucher as they only had a female bed! I was rudely turned away to find a place in Nice for this overwhelmingly overbooked holiday weekend. It was disgusting, rude and utterly unacceptable. I have never written a review like this before, and I hope I never have cause to do it again. My only consolation from this miserable weekend is the knowledge that this review may prevent someone else from experiencing this wretched place.

I can't express my distaste and disgust at this pace. You know when a place is only interested in how much money it can generate but doesn't care if the customer is happy or safe? Yeah this is exactly the place. I have never experienced such a thing ever in my life. First of all, I was well aware that check in closes at 11pm, and I have no problem with that. What I have a problem with is the lack of empathy the staff have here. So I arrived at the airport late as my flight was delayed. Bare in mind I am a young female travelling on my own!!! So I call the hostel at 10:30pm, and asked if they would be willing to just wait 5 mins after check in closes as I am on my way but delayed because of my flight. The response! "No check in after 11pm" I explained that I understood but it wasn't my fault that my flight delayed. "That's not my problem, check in closes at 11pm" I then proceed to ask him if he is willing to allow a young female to sleep on the streets. He said "I don't care, that is not my problem, if you get here before check in closes, I'll check you in, if not, then you will have to find somewhere else" I was astounded!!!!! I couldn't believe he was willing to let me sleep on the streets!!! So I'm now having a mini panic attack, trying everything to get to the hostel, but I ended up having to stay at the airport, 😓 thankfully no one kicked me out. I then arrive the next day, after I called the previous day to make sure my reservation still stood and they would still honour it for the duration of my time there. I arrived, and the problems started. They didn't want to check me in, because I didn't arrive the previous day!!! I was livid!!!!! I calmly explained the whole situation and asked them to confirm with the person who was on the previous night. Eventually it got sorted out but I was worn out by the end of it. That very evening I was in the reception area past 11pm, downloading a book, and you never guess what!!! A young man walks in and proceeds to check in!!!! After 11pm!!!!! I couldn't believe it! I was given sooo much Aggro, and this guy just walks of the streets and gets checked in. Am I not more vulnerable to attacks than a guy? The place was an infested mess of bed bugs and mice. I got bitten so bad that after 2 months my skin still bears the scars 😓 the room boasted of having A/C???? Haha!!! We baked like pies in the room that I shared with 5 other people. The a/c was broken and had been broken for months!!!! One of the ladies lived in the room apparently. The bathroom was so disgusting, I felt more dirty when I came out of the shower!!! How is that even possible 😬 Went to use the kitchen utensils at one point, and I opened a draw and was greeted with mice droppings 😷 that was the last straw for me. That will be the last time I stay here. I'll go to my usual place that is friendly, clean and just a joy to be at. Overall, this place is a nightmare, horrible staff with no empathy, unclean surroundings and an awful experience all round.

I like the place. Good location, free wifi and this was first place where we actually met new people. Big plus was you get to lock your luggage for the time when you get to know the city. I really recommend to book a hostel and not hotel when you want to meet people.

Watch out because some booking sites describe this as a hotel, which it most definitely is not ! If I could have rated it no stars I would have done. Think French hospitality of the 1970's (ie take it or leave it)

When we got to the hostel, they gave us our key (€30 deposit) and told us our room was not there. They had a man guide us 15 minutes away from the hostel to a small building, and when we opened the for it was pitch black inside. He brought us to the 2nd floor and opened a 6 bed dorm room with a bathroom (no toilet paper first night), & kitchen (with no appliances or cutlery). We were concerned because we are two 22 yr old girls and the whole situation seemed sketchy. The guy said it was a "new part" of the hostel but the building he brought us to was not identified as Hotel Altair and we would have never found it on our own. This new part of the hostel is much farther from the train station than the actual hostel. There were no lockers or luggage storage areas, so we had to carry our valuables with us everywhere The new part of the hostel location was very close to a beautiful beach and we were also under the impression that it was nicer than the actual hostel. But the circumstances still seemed very sketchy and illegitimate. Seems they just rented an apartment blocks away from their original location to make some extra money, and it's not completely finished or something. Very strange & confusing experience.
