Perched high on a sheer cliff with a commanding view of the River Lot and surrounding countryside, the Chateau de Mercues is a seven century old royal castle and Relais & Chateaux property that leaves a little bit to be desired in its hotel room operation but easily exceeds all other expectations with its gourmet restaurant. Exquisite gourmet food, great... more

The Chateau itself is beautiful and is in beautiful surroundings, however, when you look at previous rewiews over the last few years things obviously have not improved. The breakfast was an absolute joke, cold scrambled eggs, the bain marie was not switched on! When this was pointed out they just threw my eggs away and switched it on!!! Not good... more

This castle is absolutely beautiful on the outside - the pictures are accurate. Beautiful grounds, nice big pool, many places to hike. The rooms, however, are very "tired". The bed ruined my back, the carpet was thin as paper and the rooms were quite musty smelling. We stayed in a Junior Suite, our friends stayed in a VERY large suite... more

Absolutely superb front of house service. Beautiful property. Pleasant rooms. Magnificent pool and gardens. Breakfast was tired and overpriced. Ate in the restaurant one evening. Beautiful dining room. Very stuffy, slow, old fashioned service, ideal if you like lectures from the sommelier and posing. Very expensive and dull, mediocre/poor food, small choice, in small to microscopic portions. Many guests eat... more

My girlfriend and I stayed at the Chateau Mercues while on vacation visiting her family in France. A castle and vineyard on a bluff, we found it to be quite romantic. The customer service is outstanding; we were served drinks after hours, and had a swim well into 3 in the morning. The room was rustic but refined, having exposed... more

Location: Spectacular views of the valley down below. Breathtaking location. Rooms: we were placed in what looked like the servant's quarters. Had to walk outside thru the courtyard, past the swinging kitchen staff door and walk down a flight of stairs to get to our room in the back corder. i actually think it's an embarassment for the R &... more

We are frequent visitors to Europe, especially France, and this was one of the most picturesque hotels we've stayed at. It was built in 1212 and situated on limestone cliffs overlooking the Lot River Valley. My wife, our two kids (4 and 6 yrs at the time) and I stayed at Château de Mercuès in July 2003. We were taking... more

This is a very beautiful property located about 5km outside Cahors. You have to have a car if you are staying at this property. It is close to the small village of Mercues, but not within walking distance. It is part of a working vineyard and closes from November 1 to April 1. It is an authentic old castle. There... more

if you can afford this kind of hotel (the price is of course the weak point), just go as this is totally perfect : the location, quietness, staff, car park, gardens , room service (your bed is prepared for the night in the evening & lights are switched on to welcome you back to your room...), decoration inside the room... more

I stayed at the Chateau for several nights in 2001 and have nothing bad to say. The Chateau was beautifully done. Our room was very nice, and the bathroon was huge. We ate at in both of the dining rooms, and it was so good. The headwaiter was always patient and kind enough to explain the french menu to us... more
