The Esmeralda was the ideal Hotel for myself and several colleagues for the duration of Paris design week and the Maison & Objet and Deco Off fairs. Centrally located, the facade presents a spectacular view of Notre Dame Cathedral and is within walking distance of all major attractions. The rooms were clean, comfortable and warm and the bathroom facilities private... More

the Hotel Esmerelda is right opposite Notre Dame, just behind Shakespeare & Co. It's small, relatively friendly and very old. Don't settle for room 6 if you're given it - a cupboard with no view and a bed. Instead appeal for #3, which is of adequate size but a lovely view (around the corner) of Notre Dame. (see pic) Typically... More

Fantastic location, comfy bed, cosy, warm, clean and friendly, helpful staff. Yes the decor isn't conventional hotel decor, there's no tv, hairdryer or kettle, the wifi only works in the lobby and there's no lift but it all just adds to it's charm! It was a great base to explore Paris and lovely to come back to after a busy... More

I spent 2 nights in a room with view of Notre Dame on the 4th floor; no lift so climbing stairs is all there is. The room was very comfortable and mostly quiet except for a bit of street noise. Fantastic view over the little park, the river and Notre Dame. Very helpful and friendly staff. No breakfast but a... More

If you can find it hidden away in its street, this place is very quirky and very very old, so you have to accept all that goes with that, an ill fitting window, no lifts, tiny corridors etc but it is a gem as it is so central. You can see Notre Dame from our window just across the way.... More

I obviously was not expecting luxury when I booked this budget hotel, but I was certainly expecting cleanliness. Unfortunately my room was a big disappointment, the carpet was worn through to the floor boards in places, and heavily stained. Stains on the walls and wallpaper. Just makes the room look very grubby. I know the charm of this hotel is... More

The pictures don't really do this place justice. It was just so quaint and lovely and I would stay here again. We had an unprecedented view of Notre Dame and we didn't even know till we got up to the room! The room was quite small for the 3 of us but overall we were out and about for most... More

We spent 2 weeks here for our honeymoon in the 1990s. We returned 20 years later for our anniversary, along with our teenaged kids. The family room is on the top floor, so it's a climb, especially with luggage. But I love this hotel with all of its quirkiness. I love Notre Dame out the window. I love the park... More

Whilst enjoying an afternoon stroll around Paris I decided to stop here for a quick drink to people watch. I have to write a review not just for the fantastic view and surrounding but for the cracking maître d' (something that's hard to find in Paris!!) What would have been a forgetable drink became a holiday memory, as the staff... More

I stayed in this hotel many years ago so I knew what to expect. Minimal service, quirky rooms, and a BRILLIANT location. Nothing had really changed. I did have to tell them that I really disliked the wood panelled room I was in. Initially felt like I was in a coffin but then I purchased flowers and a bottle of... More

Staying in Ile de la Cite / Ile Saint-Louis

Neighborhood Profile
Ile de la Cite / Ile Saint-Louis
Two islands sit in the middle of the Seine at the very heart of Paris. The more majestic one, Ile de la Cité, sparkles with history. This is the birthplace of Paris, the home of the Gothic Sainte-Chapelle, and the site of the prison where Marie Antoinette was held before her execution. Tourists flock to see the iconic Notre Dame and the beautiful bridges that straddle the Seine. Ile Saint-Louis, the more provincial island, welcomes you with cozy traditional eateries, small boutiques, and what some people say is the best ice cream in the city. This is essential Paris from its very beginnings to its modern appeal.
