I highly recommend Chateau d’Urtubie for your stay in St.Jean de Luz, St. Sebastian or Bilbao. It’s a classic chateau very nicely located, quiet and has very friendly and multi-lingual ( French, Spanish, German, and even Japanese! ) staff members. When you hear a stay in a chateau, you may expect the chateau to be very old, cold, shabby and... more

Friends! We stayed at the chateau hotel d'Urtubie mid-May and we had the chance of being met and shown around this historical place by the owner, the count himself, a very charming person, who made us feel most welcome. We stayed into a beautifully decorated, large and quiet room overlooking the 6 acres park. Although the decor and furniture was... more

The chateau can be highly recommended: very comfortable rooms, elevator, swimming pool, very polite personell and the romantic feeling of a chateau which is in family ownership for more than 600 years. When we arrived the count appreciated us personally, presented us the chateau and explained the history of his family and the chateau. If you are looking for a... more

Genuine 13th Century Chateau where your host is a genuine Count with the grace and manners one would expect. The Count and Countess have done an incredible job fitting modern rooms and facilities into a genuine stone-built Chateau. Sometimes that results in something surprising (bathroom is en-suite down a 10 foot corridor to a turret!). There is an elevator. The... more

This magnificent chateau is in a fascinating part of France. The property, including gardens, a swimming pool and tennis court, is beautifully maintained, and it is perfectly located for exploring the Pyrenees and the charming Basque villages of France and northern Spain. Bilbao's magnificent Gehry-designed Guggenheim museum is an hour and a half away by car. In addition, the count,... more

We decided to stay extra nights in this fabulous chateau for several reasons. The room (at the top of the tower) is large and very comfortable with a beautiful outlook from the turret window, the Chateau d'Urtubie reflects the history of this fascinating region so well, and, especially, Msr le Compte the owner is a genuinely charming man who gives his time... more

There is nothing fake about this ancestorial family home. To be welcomed at the former castle gates by the current count was indeed unusual. But this is no run of the mill modern hotel with all the usual plastic trims and spa baths. This is a real CHATEAU run and lived in by the same family that has been there... more

Magical, Stunning, Beautiful. Even these three words do not do justice to the Chateau d'Urtubie. My wife and I stayed for four nights (June 6 - 9)and it was delightful. Neither of us speak much french but this did not cause a problem, the staff were extremely accommodating and the owner Count Paul was very friendly and spoke excellent english.... more
