This is not a hotel for the fainthearted! Over300 years old, it's all stairs, quirky corridors and rooms. It's up for sale, so who can blame the owners for not upgrading the rather tatty decor?! However, my room was spotless, bedding and towels pristine white. The staff were very friendly and helpful. Food? OK for the price, though breakfast was... More

Some of the other reviews of this hotel can be off-putting but as I just wanted a bed for the night after a few days travelling, and I wanted somewhere within walking distance of the railway station, I decided to stay here. I'm pleased that I did. The staff were friendly and helpful, the room was clean and had all... More

A touch run-down but full of history and character. Reception efficient and friendly, and my room clean and spacious. It was a Wednesday night and the bar was not busy, so there was no problem with noise. Bar food average, but arrived without delay. Location ideal if you like to be in the centre of town. Only criticism would be... More

15 of our wedding party stayed here and we all agreed that, although the place needed a bit of tlc, we couldn't fault the helpfulness of the staff - they kept a room ready for us with coffee and tea and the barstaff were very accommodating. Rooms were spacious and the bed linen was clean. Breakfast was full English. Great... More

My friend and I stayed here on Saturday 7 June as we were going to the theatre and this was near and only £40. We looked on Tripadvisor the night before and seriously thought about cancelling our reservation as the reviews were so horrific, but we didn't. Yes the hotel is shabby and could do with a refurb but then... More

Stayed here on a business commute, it was a nightmare. The sheets were dirty and filthy and straight from the likely lads era. The whole place needed a clean and to top it off there was death metal band playing that night. You couldn't make it up, I would just get settled and then daa daar they would start up... More

The bill and Vic was not the cleanest place, this is basically a pub with rooms and no where near a hotel. The rooms were dark and gloomy. And the communal area downstairs was not much to write home about. The food however was tasty and the service ok. If you are looking for a bed and don't care about... More
