After meeting a polite receptionist my stay went totally down hill from there. Cleanliness- Dirty bedcovers, smashed tiles in the barthroom, mildew and a strange smell. Room- Small, smelly and uncomfortable, I thought they'd left a mint on my pillow, Nope that was my pillow, as thin as an after eight mint!! Value- The breakfast was nice but we were... more

No complaints about this hotel - rather mystified by some of the other comments. It is not particularly memorable, but it certainly wasn't one to avoid either. The room was clean and comfortable, although it did become rather hot at night. Breakfast was good, lots of choice and quite a stylish dining room. We did not pay anything like the... more

I stayed here for a weekend Round Table function. While the hotel is a bit tired in places, I have never encountered such helpful staff in my life. Nothing was too much trouble for them. There were lots of little unexpected touches like a surprise round of complementary bacon butties at 1:30 in the morning. You are not staying here... more

The price is scandalous. I thought when I booked for two nights that the price was for the two nights inc. VAT. I was charges £112 PLUS VAT per night for a single room with a crap shower that didn't work properly. Double check if you book by phone what price is being charged. I tried to cancel the second... more

My review is a little dated but as I am planning another trip to the UK the memories of my stay at the Red Lion are once again on my mind. I was very disappointed with my stay at the Red Lion. The Receptionists were less than accommodating and it seemed like huge effort to even acknowledge my presence. I... more

Generally not as bad as I had feared. I was lucky enough to be in a newly decorated room and there are signs that money is being spent to bring the standard of this hotel up. The room was a reasonable size and fitted out in a predictable budget hotel style but very clean and tidy (with the exception of... more

The only redeeming factor of this place is that is in central to town where the are pubs and restaurants are on your doorstep. Silly thing is, don't most hotels have a bar and a restaurant? That to me completely negates the point of this place. The Red Lion is tired and in need of complete modernisation. As stated before,... more

After reading the reviews on here i was a little wary about booking the Red Lion. However, we wanted somewhere central, where we could walk and have a few drinks and grab some food. All other hotels seemed to far out of Basingstoke for this. After calling the Red Lion they said they had their Lion Suite available. This had... more

My mother and I stayed here for one night as we needed somewhere near Basingstoke station. She booked it because she had stayed there on a previous visit to the town. First impressions weren't great because the card machine at the front desk would not accept my mother's credit card. Eventually it accepted one of my cards. The room was... more
