The Carpenters was recommended to us as a nice local pub serving good food ...... The food wasn't good .... It was exceptional!! Friendly welcoming staff for whom nothing was too much trouble. We felt at home and enjoyed the food so much we returned the following day for more! Definitely ignore any poor review on here for this place... More

If, like me, you love watching trains go by - accompanied by a mellowing drink and delicious food - this will be your ideal pub. Actually, even if you're indifferent to trains, you can't go wrong with the nice beer garden and the cosy interior! The portions here are huge - especially the puddings. The fish and venison pies are... More

Just stayed here for a couple of nights. Dave and wife Helen are great hosts and nothing is too much trouble for them. The rest of the staff we met were lovely and judging by the cleanliness and standard of the food there must be some equally excellent people behind the scenes. Thank you for a very relaxed stay and... More

We stayed two nights in April while visiting our son in Wiltshire. We brought our eldely parents and our cocker spaniel. The large rooms were ideal for us, with big, comfy beds, a settee and a big bathroom. It was great to be able to bring the dog into the pub with us for breafast and other meals. The food... More

We were staying in a hotel just down the road, when we popped in here for some dinner. Was greeted with a warm welcome, the service was excellent, the waitress/bar tender that was on was lovely and friendly and very helpful. Food was unbelievable, fantastic vegetarian selection and good value for money. Lovely fresh cooked veg and home cooked meal.... More

Visited this place because tripadvisor gave it such good reviews and I wasn't disappointed. The menu is extensive with something to suit everybody. The service is friendly, food good quality and the atmosphere is great. I just love this place and we will definitely be back.

What a lovely pub! Warm, welcoming, excellent food and dog friendly too. Our lunch was very good value, they do a fixed price menu which we thought we'd try, and were not disappointed. Lovely to get fresh vegetables, properly cooked, and a jug of gravy to go with the very tasty pie. Our dog enjoyed it too, she was given... More

Also we had some fantastic wine. Thanks for a great evening and gettgat sstroganoff on the menu.

Dog friendly. Over-attentive owners (came to the room twice to see us in less than16 hours). Chalet room fine. Food mediocre. Bill came to much more than we thought it should be-add ons for food. Breakfast wasn't included in the price. Felt we'd been ripped off. Garden needs attention. Pub interior is nice. Trains run past the pub all night-... More

Having seen the pub sign a few times on visits to Shrivenham, we decided to give it a go and it was a fantastic decision. Service was welcoming and friendly, food was really good and excellent value for money and all washed down with proper beer, what more could you ask for? We didn't use it to stay in but... More
