We stayed here for one night this week and I am glad it was only one night. They had four levels of accommodation ranging from economy to deluxe. Ours at £99 for a double room was rated as standard, one above economy. I am glad I didn't have a basic room, that's all I can say. The shower was the... more

I stayed here this year. My family's from Benbecula, but I had to go earlier than them and have always rated the hotel, but my god. I stayed three nights, paid £69 a night for the honour and it was awful. Room was shabby, shower was worse than useless. TV didn't work, and the food? £7 for a jacket potato... more

Sadly I can only agree with the other reviews of both poor service and accommodation. We stayed in the Dark Island Hotel in July 2006 during an island-hopping holiday with two young children. The Dark Island was unquestionably the poorest hotel we stayed in during that time, and it was the most expensive. We were put in a smoking room,... more

This hotel is an ideal example of what's wrong with the standard of accommodation, service and food, in Scotland. It's overpriced, I paid £69 for a single room that was small and dark. The en suite was tiny and, when I had a shower in the morning, I was scalded by the water changing temperature very suddenly. There's also a... more

I have stayed here on business over the last number of months and have always enjoyed my stays. The last room I had was reasonably well appointed and had views across the sand dunes over to the mountains of South Uist. A very pleasant outlook indeed. The hotel itself is in places a little dated however this is in my... more

Stayed on business previously, standard was acceptable, took family on next trip. Room promised was unavailable on arrival after 600 mile journey, until we were forced to push pompous reception manager very hard. We would have to move rooms after 2 nights due to wedding, this I knew when booking in by phone. First room family suite (£160 for B&B... more

I dont particularly want to write this, but i will....... I am from the islands and have come to this hotel/bar/restauarant for many years. It used to be one of the finest in the Western Isles but has become rundown and had no money put into it for years. I think part of the problem is that when it was... more

We stayed one night at the Dark Island Hotel on Benbecula, Outer Hebrides and we are so glad that it was only one night! I agree totally with the other review on this site for the Dark Island. The hotel is certainly well named - the decor, furniture and ambience was dark, shabby, totally outdated and well overdue for redecoration.... more

We stayed one Saturday night in the Dark Island Hotel in May 2006, room rate £99.00 per night. We were deeply disappointed. The room was cold, dark and shabby; probably not been decorated in years and it showed. Furniture and furnishings were tatty and the en-suite generally in need of a good clean-up and some running repairs. The room was... more
