Stayed on the way to and from the Orkneys. We were arriving late and leaving early, so we didn't need anything fancy. It is an inexpensive, no frills place. There is a kitchen / dining area with a computer & internet. They have some basic breakfast foods in there that you can eat. Taxis were waiting outside in the morning... More

I’m not sure why some people would have an aversion to a hostel situated over a chip shop. Sandra’s is a basic, no-frills hostel, but one of its advantages has to be that after the huge trek up to the northernmost corner of the British mainland, a guest can indulge in a steaming serving of freshly cooked chips smothered in... I would have rated this hostel higher had it not been for some administrative errors. I booked a night's accommodation 2 months in advance and received confirmation by e-mail. However, when I arrived just before 10 p.m. (and found reception in the chip shop underneath) the proprietor could not find my name in the hostel's diary - nor those of... More

We arrived at Sandra's Hostel after riding Land's End to John O'Groats, the staff checked us in and let us take the bikes up to the room which was helpful as the bike shed no longer existed. We went to get dinner straight away then came back to the room later in the evening. When we went to go to... More

Sandra's is actually very good. There is a large well-equipped kitchen which encourages people to be sociable. And, unusually, they lay on tea, coffee, biscuits, milk and brekfast cereal at no extra cost. At £16 per night, it's good value. The hostel is located over a chip shop, so the cooking smells are a bit offputting outside, but I didn't... More

After reading the review we were frankly expecting this place to be pretty awful. It wasn't. The room had very clean freshly laundered bedding and the en suite bathroom was clean. The kitchen living area was quite grubby and untidy and it looks as though the staff from the chip shop downstairs have their breaks up there. You get 10%... More

Stayed here just one night. Rooms were a decent size and had its own en-suite which is not always the case in a hostel! Common room/ kitchen well equipped and had a computer for internet access although free wifi could be picked up. The main downside to this hostel is that the rooms smelled a bit- not too sure why?... Rooms and facilities are not the cleanest. The location is quite good in the middle of Thurso. They provide some free breakfast stuff comprising toast, jam and cereals. We stayed here before heading over to Orkney by ferry the next morning - fair enough!

Stayed here on my way to John o groats. Chose because of cost. First time I have ever stayed anywhere like this. It was brilliant. Fantastic atmosphere in the common room. Rooms were basic but bed was comfy and I was surprised how warm. Defo recommend this place and if you have never stayed in a hostel like this, do... More

My Son and his friend had cycled 900 miles over 9 days (Lands End - John O'Groats, with myself as support car for the last 400 miles). We'd decided to stay in Thurso for the night and set off home the next day, so rang the missus back home to book us somewhere for the night. She rang back telling... More
