A friend and I stayed here for two nights in November, so off season, but the staff were pleasant and helpful and the room clean , although a bit dated completely fine. Breakfast was good and dinner ok, though presentation was better than it tasted . For the amount of money they charged it was just nice to get 3... more

I took advantage of cheap rail tickets to visit Thurso and the first hotel I phoned was the royal who after a very quick phonecall I had a room booked for two nights at a very reasonable rate . My room was clean , warm and spacious with tv and tea and coffee and all , bathroom and shower were... more

We stayed here with an escorted bus tour. It was a basic room, but clean. It's an old hotel that the owners have tried to fix up, but it's stil an old, outdated basic room. The room was hot & we couldn't get the heater to turn off. There is a tea kettle in the room, with tea and coffee.... more

The only good thing about this hotel is that it was warm. The whole place needs knocking down and starting over. The breakfast was awful when we finally got some. When we went into our room I thought I was drunk as everything was on a slope. more

The Royal Hotel was built in circa 1819 and as such is a rambling building though I am unaware of any sloping rooms. I am sorry you did not enjoy your breakfast however had this been pointed out at the time perhaps I could have rectified this.

We booked this hotel on the internet after deciding at short notice to visit family, unfortunately they didnt have time to tell us how bad it was! The decor is very very tired, the room was unclean with cobwebs above the bed, the mattress springs were broken and the noise from outside is awful. Even worse is the creaky floorboards... more

The management have obviously been trying hard to make the hotel more presentable than just one of those tired old hotels which cheap coach parties occupy. The room was a decent size and freshly enough decorated. The hotel seems to be run by kids. I don't think I saw a member of staff over 20 anywhere. Not that there is... more

I stayed one night at this hotel on the way back from a week's diving in Orkney and thought it was excellent value. My single room was spacious, spotlessly clean and nicely decorated with TV, coffee/tea making facilities; the hotel staff were friendly and efficient; cooked breakfast was very good. I would definitely stay again and would be happy to... more

I travelled here on a business trip and did not choose this hotel myself. The clientele are mainly old-age tour groups who do not seem to understand that other people may need their sleep after such a looooonnnnng drive to this hotel. My room was down a creaky corridor with so many levels and fire doors it felt like I... more

The Hotel originates back to circa 1819 hence the various levels etc. On the night of your visit there were indeed coach parties staying in the Hotel however we welcome many visitors who travel independently as well as those on business. I am sorry that on this occasion the food did not meet your expectations however not only do we...

The Royal Hotel appears to be a quaint, old hotel from the outside and upon entering the lobby, it is definitely old and quaint. Unfortunately, upon closer inspection the lobby furniture has holes and the carpet is in need of renewal. Our room on the second floor was cramped, but adequate. The bathroom, which consisted of a cubicle shower not... more

I spent four nights here in May with a Scottish coach tour company. I found no fault with the room or bathroom-all clean and warm but the meals, especially dinner, was a disaster. The staff did their best but it seemed an age before we got served. Quite frankly I have had better in a factory canteen. On the final night... more
