I travelled here on a business trip and did not choose this hotel myself. The clientele are mainly old-age tour groups who do not seem to understand that other people may need their sleep after such a looooonnnnng drive to this hotel. My room was down a creaky corridor with so many levels and fire doors it felt like I... more

The Hotel originates back to circa 1819 hence the various levels etc. On the night of your visit there were indeed coach parties staying in the Hotel however we welcome many visitors who travel independently as well as those on business. I am sorry that on this occasion the food did not meet your expectations however not only do we...

The Royal Hotel appears to be a quaint, old hotel from the outside and upon entering the lobby, it is definitely old and quaint. Unfortunately, upon closer inspection the lobby furniture has holes and the carpet is in need of renewal. Our room on the second floor was cramped, but adequate. The bathroom, which consisted of a cubicle shower not... more

I spent four nights here in May with a Scottish coach tour company. I found no fault with the room or bathroom-all clean and warm but the meals, especially dinner, was a disaster. The staff did their best but it seemed an age before we got served. Quite frankly I have had better in a factory canteen. On the final night... more

If your looking for a quiet place to stay, don't stay here. We read plenty of negative reviews on this site before arriving here with our tour. This hotel is "tired" to say the least. Our room slanted one direction, you really were walking downhill in the room. The shower was never warm/hot, we finally figured out you had to... more

With regard to the lobby furniture we have taken on board your comments and replaced the worn chairs. No 2 rooms in the hotel are the same and I apologise your bathroom was not up to your expectations however I am glad you found the staff welcoming and efficient

The Royal looks impressive from the outside but immediatly sets the tone as you enter the foyer. Tired, antiquated and trying to live on past glories. The furniture in the foyer was ripped and the carpet is long past its sell by date. Our rooms were on the second floor and were reached in a lift with wall to ceiling carpet.... more

Perhaps a Sunday night in March is not the best of times to visit a small town in the North of Scotland. The entrance lobby of the hotel from the outside looks quite inviting with a fire burning. Unfortunately closer inspection shows that all the furniture has holes and the carpet is in need of renewal. This sadly sets the... more

Thankyou for taking the time to offer your comments during your recent stay. It is unfortunate that you did not raise your concerns about the room you were allocated during your stay with us as I am confident a more suitable room would have been available. I have discussed you observation regarding breakfast with our chef as this is most...

The Royal Hotel is old but the room we had was very comfortable warm and clean, although we visited out of season the staff were very friendly and made you feel at home. The only downside was the guinness didnt pour well I would also recommend a day trip to Orkney more

We are working very hard to improve our food offering and since your visit we have changed our menus and customer feed back has been positive. With reference to the public areas yes I fully except the furniture is tied and old and the carpets are due a change and it is an area that will be addressed in the...

Stayed on 17/11/2008, The room was small, had stains on the wall above the heater the was badly in need of redecoration.Bathroom was tiny with no room for a wash hand basin-it was in the bedroom!Dinner @£16.50 was abysmal - "tomato" and lentil soup was lentil soup as we all know it , it tasted like Cambells and was lukewarm.The... more

Obviously I am very disappointed to read your comments and fully take on board your observations, if we had been aware of your feelings regarding room 158 we would have happily offered you an alternative room as we have 103 individual rooms of varying types. Please be assured all soup is homemade although not an excuse for it not being...

Thurso is very, very remote without a lot of hotels that can accomdate a large tour group (which is how I was travelling). Given the location, I think the Royal is adequate. The staff was very efficient dealing with the 3 tour groups there at the same time, rooms are clean and large (at least ours was). It's an older... more
