The Royal looks impressive from the outside but immediatly sets the tone as you enter the foyer. Tired, antiquated and trying to live on past glories. The Royal Hotel is old but the room we had was very comfortable warm and clean, although we visited out of season the staff were very friendly and made you feel at home. The only downside was the guinness didnt pour well I would also recommend a day trip to Orkney more

Thurso is very, very remote without a lot of hotels that can accomdate a large tour group (which is how I was travelling). Given the location, I think the Royal is adequate.
