From the bright smile of the proprietor's daughter who greeted me to the stunning Scottish full breakfast that finished my stay, every moment of staying at Pennyland House B&B in Thurso was a sheer delight! I cannot recommend the place enough! My room (Royal Dornoch) was absolutely beautiful, with magnificent views across to the Orkney Isles. I felt that this... More

This B&B has a modern interior that respects the old and historic house. The rooms are very comfortable and breakfast is served in a bright and spacious dining room. The rooms have a well-choosen furniture. Carol and Raymond are always there to help you with your excursions and give very good tips for finding restaurants.

From the first phone call ahead to advise Carol we would be arriving late it was apparent this was going to be a really special stay. On arrival we were greeted by Carol who was most welcoming even though we arrived around 9pm!! Our room was spotless, spacious & had everything we needed pls great views across to Orkney. Bed... After cycling from Lands End to JoG all I wanted was a friendly and comfortable place to stay. Pennyland House excelled in every department and the owners are just great people. A simply stunning place to stay.

I am so lucky to have found the Pennyland House! Carol was such a delightful host, and I simply could not be more pleased with my stay. I was in the St. Andrews room, which was absolutely one of the most luxurious accommodations of all the B&B stays I spent during my three weeks. The room was enormous and the... More

We stayed here for one night and were delighted with the service, accommodation and location. The hosts are very friendly and helpful. Nothing is too much trouble. We hope to return when visiting The Orkney Islands and will definitely recommend Pennyland House to friends.

We stayed here a couple of nights ago, and it's definitely the best B&B we've ever experienced. Hosts Carol, Raymond and family made us feel really welcome, taking time to chat and suggest places we might like to visit. The views over to Orkney are spectacular, and our room was huge - as was the en suite - and all... More

We have been staying in B&B for the last 2 weeks while driving around Scotland and Pennyland House far surpasses anywhere else. The hosts were very friendly, the service was next to none and the room was great. This is the first B&B we have stayed in where the ensuite was a full sized bathroom. Home made shortbread in the... Ray is a brilliant host and this is reflected in the high standards encountered at Pennylands. We stayed for one night, calling on the off chance- what a find - a large house converted to a very high standard. Really the accolades written by others are true, I can really only say 'Thanks' Ray for helping me out of a... More

This is one of the best B&Bs I have ever been in. It is an eighteenth century B listed building where the founder of the Boy's Brigade was born. The current owner's, Raymond and Carol, just cannot do enough for you. Provide information on areas of local interest including marking it all on a map. The rooms are spotless, furnished... More

Official Description (provided by the hotel)
Pennyland House is located on the edge of Thurso in a quiet, but convenient location and boasts wonderful views of the Orkney Islands, Dunnet Head, Scrabster and Thurso Bay. It is a three story building dating back over two hundred years. Built in 1780 it is historically noted for being the birthplace of Sir William Alexander Smith, the founder of the Boys Brigade. Over the past few years we have sympathetically renovated this historic building and turned it into a comfortable and interesting bed and breakfast for our guests. Although not yet rated, we are confident that you will not be disappointed with the quality and service during your stay with us. We have enjoyed putting our personal stamp on Pennyland House and have tried to reflect what we believe people want in a 'home from home'. ... more   less
