We stayed three nights here this past month. Bill is a lovely host, very helpful, knowledgable about the city, and friendly, I really enjoyed chatting with him in the mornings. The rooms are clean, and a nice solid breakfast in the morning as well with home-made jam. The house is about 10 minutes from the city center on the train.... More

We stayed one night at Bill and were really pleased! We were very warmly received, and Bill has provided us with all the information we needed. The Guest House is located in a quiet street, yet close to the train station (one station to Glasgow center). Especially nice was the breakfast with homemade bread and homemade jam. All in all,... This B&B only has 2 bed rooms. There is no en suite but the 2 rooms share one bathroom. If you take both rooms then you essentially have a self contained flat. You even have your own entrance so no feeling of disturbing the owners. I travelled with my 2 adult kids and found this a perfect solution (each room has... More

Definitely a home from home experience. Bill and Charlie (the adorable dog) provided a warm and friendly welcome and I was at ease straight away. I loved the flat... very thoughtfully decorated with a balance of homely modern, beautiful and interesting old furniture, quirky selection of artworks and stuff to ponder. Slabs of homemade bread and marmalade for breakfast was... More

We spent threee nights over Christmas at 1883. It is great valure for money and we were made very welcome. We loved the period pieces of furniture and found the facilities warm and comfortable. It is great to have your own key and be able to come and go as you please. We will definitely be staying again when we... More

I've just spent 3 nights at 1883 with a friend, doing some Xmas shopping. I was hesistant booking somewhere out of town but getting the train in each day couldn't have been easier - £1.60 return, 5 minute trip and very regular service. We had dinner twice in a local restaurant which served fantastic home made food and would have... More

This review is a a bit late but later is better than never. I took a month long trip to Scotland September 2010 and a few days before my trip my friend told me that he wouldn't be in town for the first few days and I would have to find a place to stay until he got back. I... More

We booked to stay here for two nights and, upon arrival, I instantly regretted the decision. There is nothing attractive about the entry to the block and I started looking for an out for the second night. But first impressions can be so wrong. There are no airs and graces about the 1883 but it is great value for money.... More

If you’re looking for a down-to-earth “local” lodging experience at a below-average cost and great hosts, the 1883 Guest House should suit you to a tee. Bill, the owner, and his American wife are friendly and helpful and put you right at ease. The neighborhood looks a little dated, but we felt safe walking through it to find a restaurant.... More
