16 Broughton has got to be the best B&B in Edinburgh. And Eric Robinson the best host. Located on a quiet residential street (just minutes from everything you would want to see in Edinburgh) the B&B is up four flights of stairs. Not a tough climb and WELL worth it. Incidentally, you can part for free at the front door... More

Eric is the most charming host and welcomes you to his beautiful apartment as if you were a friend, rather than a paying guest. The apartment is wonderful and well worth the climb up several flights of stairs! The communal stairwell is clean and attractive with well placed benches on several landings, should a brief rest be necessary! Eric's apartment... More

Eric your host, has a large and beautifully decorated Georgian home into which he welcomes guests. I'm almost loath to write a review lest he gets too popular, gets the wrong kind of guests or something else happens and he decides to stop doing this so we can't go back. Breakfast is a very elegant and complete continental style, served... More

What a beautiful place! Situated in the nice georgian area, at walking distance from Edinburgh main attractions (4 minutes from princes St., 8 min from castle), Broughton place is a quiet and beautiful street with many restaurants around. We found Eric Robinson's house on the website "aboutscotland" and we can tell you that the larger room we stayed in was... More

16 Broughton Place is a wonderful place to stay in Edinburgh. It is the residence of the owner Eric Robinson who graciously lets 2 bedrooms in his beautiful, centrally located apartment. Each room has a private bathroom. We stayed in the bigger of the two rooms and it was just wonderful. Eric has an extensive art collection that is beautifully... More

Staying in Broughton & Calton

Neighborhood Profile
Broughton & Calton
Lying where grandiose New Town townhouses give way to malls and utilitarian housing, Broughton and Calton have long been transitional neighborhoods with a mixed identity. It’s here that Edinburgh’s gay village found a home in the 1980s. But gay culture is anything but overt along bustling epicenter Broughton Street; even if polished pubs, hip bistros, smart delis and art galleries all speak of affluent good taste. The top of Leith Walk is more ragged. This major thoroughfare boasts a famously gritty gay club, as well as a strip of good Indian restaurants. Regal Georgian and Victorian townhouses preside over largely deserted streets in Calton, where only the occasional restaurant or hotel brings much life. Even so, a steady trickle of idlers and picnickers pass by to climb Calton Hill for its wide-open lawns, wonderful city views, and curious monuments – an Athenian-style temple among them.
