This hostel is actually part of Edinburgh University and a student hall - which means it's accessible for outside visitors only during the summer holidays, July and August (dates vary slightly each year). For European visitors it may come as a surprise, but students at British colleges often have to remove all their stuff from their small flats during the... More

Hello, Thanks so much for taking the time to let us know about your stay at Edinburgh Metro and good to read you enjoyed your stay and would recommend us. There are a few housekeeping issues you have raised her, particularly in relation to the sheets, these should have been changed during your stay, and we will ensure that we... More

This hostel is well located and provides private rooms that are very good. It is as if you were a student in a univeristy buildig. The only bad thing is the kitchen: not enough dishes, pans or forks AT ALL. The rest isfine. The staff was very helpful with my luggage and helped me get free storage in the next... More

As the Hostel is used as Student accommodation, I was slightly apprehensive. Upon arrival I was pleasantly surprised. If these were my 'halls' at University, I would have been really happy. The room is basic but has everything required, desk & wardrobe etc. The bathroom was a generic shared bathroom, the kitchen & 'living room' area were pretty handy after... More

I was her for two nights during summertime, Fringe Festival was on and plenty of sold out hotels around. As it was only for 2 nights, I tried the 'hostel beds'' and guess what…I'm satisfied (in the basic needs for such basic price). Wife very speedy, bed ok (not luxurious), and shared bathroom was not always occupied…some advantage in such... More

Due to this being located in Edinburgh University's residences, the accommodation is of a very high standard. You will have a private room for the price of shared accommodation at many other hostels, the internet is very very quick and free, and most of all, the hostel is superbly located, walking distance from pretty much everything in Edinburgh.

Corneels d Thanks so much for your review of Edinburgh Metro Youth Hostel, really appreciate it. Come back and see us this year. As you mentioned there was work going on at the property last year which did overrun, this was totally out of the control of SYHA as it was working being undertaken by the university itself, we really... Good value for money. In an excellent location as the royal mile and Edinburgh castle is at a walking distance from the hostel. Ideal for backpackers and the staff is really helpful. Would definitely recommend this hostel for anyone looking for an accommodation with a good value for money.

The staff was incredibly helpfull and caring even though they were really busy at the moment when I was there. I stayed two nights there and only payed 50 pounds. (It's a really great deal for Edinburgh where accomodation is a little bit expensive!)

While the location is central and very convenient for the Edinbught Festival, this summer only hostel has a bit of a nerve to charge £40 a night for being surrounded by a 'work in progress' - this is a very active building site. Dust and noise abound. Kitchen was not as well equipped as one would have hoped. Check-in staff... More

This is a great place to stay if you are in Edinburgh for the festivals and are on a budget. You can walk from here to most of the venues, and coffee can be had at Caffe Nero at Blackwell's Bookshop which is less than 5 minutes walk up the cobbled hill. Of course you can make your own breakfast... More

I stayed 4 nights at the Metro Hostel in July 2013. With accommodation being rather expensive in Edinburgh, this was a great deal. You get a single room to yourself for just £23 per night, this is unlike most hostels that have huge dormitories. So it's great for privacy. Kitchen use is also limited to 6 people and you only... Staying in Old Town

Neighborhood Profile
Old Town
Few Edinburghers live in the Old Town, but its labyrinth of dank alleys and steep streets suggests this was not always the case. Today, it’s mostly visitors, tartan-flavored souvenir shops, and pipers that you’ll find on its cobbled streets. This is the place to get a feel for Auld Reekie (Old Smelly), as the town was once nicknamed, and stroll the Royal Mile, the thoroughfare that links the castle with the royal palace – two of Edinburgh’s great set-piece attractions. But there’s lots more exploring to do here down dozens of little alleys, or wynds, while at night the city’s busiest clubs erupt along the Cowgate which is closed to traffic for this purpose.
