Stayed at the hostel for 1 night before my Isle of Skye tour and then returned for a 2 night stay. They offered to let me keep my luggage for 3 days till i returned which was a big help ! Very conveniently located just off the Royal mile, it is easily accessible from the waverley station as well. So... More

Smart City Hostel is pretty ideally located in the old city of Edinburgh. That said, it's not the only hostel in the old city, and is actually one of a several in its immediate area. The rooms are spacious and very clean, though predictably spare and lacking in character. Beds are spartan but reasonably comfortable. And the hot water quantity... More

Thanks for taking the time to review us. We are sorry that the free wifi wasn't up to scratch when you stayed and that there was a problem with your reservation. On occasion, systems fail. This however is no fault of our guests and I can only apologise for your experience. We are glad that over all, you enjoyed your... More

Smart City Hostel is smartly located in the heart of edinburgh. Within 5 minutes walk, you get to the royal mile, the city central shopping area. It has 24 hour reception, lift, own bar and a very clean and nice room. I found the room concept is closely like YHA. Clean bedroom, minimalist design and white linen and blanket. It... More

This is the very first time I stayed in a hostel and that too with family which includes a 5 year old kid. It was an awesome experience. The best place Bar50, place full of people, both localites and travellers, young and old. Never had seen so many people in a ho(s)tel before and that too young crowd at one... More

Paid 49 quid for a private twin room for myself and my toddler which is hotel prices but really you walk into a bare dorm room and there wasn't even a light over by the desk for me to work at after the wee one finally got to sleep. On the plus side the toilet/ shower room was spacious and... More

Hi there Thanks for taking the time to review us. We aren't an overly quiet hostel on a normal basis (our bar, noise from the Cowgate and the mile travelling) and you've stayed over a weekend where we had larger groups in too. We do try to manage the noise of those in house as far as we can -... More

I was really shocked at how terrible our stay was considering I had already stayed at this hostel before two years prior. I (embarrassingly) recommended it to my friends who I was travelling with. We received a blase welcome upon entering the hostel. After inquiring about the WiFi we were told that there was no internet connection that day. AT... More

Hi there Thanks for reviewing. We are sorry about your experience. We do recall speaking to you several times at reception, where the team helped you as far as they could. We outline to all groups staying with us the standard of behaviour expected of them before they arrive with us and reinforce this when they arrive with us. Our... More

So 13 guys book into the hostel for a stag weekend......management are bound to be somewhat tolerant of a little noise and banter in the bar right???? WRONG!!!! Literally 15mins after we arrive, drop the bags and go to the bar, the manager is over telling us off for being too loud, it was 4:30pm on a Friday afternoon by... More

Hi there Thanks for reviewing us. We have lots of male groups, stags and rugby guests stay with us on a regular basis and we don’t have any problems with these types of groups in general. Ordinarily, we have good banter with groups like this. You were barred on the basis that one of your group made a derogatory personal... More

I regret saying it was a terrible experience. Although friendly staff at reception and clean room, after 10pm the noise was terrible. People outside our room were shouting and running up and down the corridor like crazy until almost 4:00 in the morning. We couldn't sleep at all and in the morning the corridor out of room was a disgusting... More

Hi there Thanks for reviewing us. We are very sorry that the noise was unacceptable. Nice clean and friendly Hostel , all Rooms have there on Shower & Toilette. Bunk Beds are ok but the Metal frame makes you feel a little bit crammed . Staff are very friendly and helpfully. Overall smart City Hostel in Edinburgh is a good place to stay.

We stayed last summer for 3 nights. Perfect location for exploring edinburgh city. Although the carpets and paintwork could do with a bit of a touch up overall I would return. I had a 12 year old with me and we stayed in a private twin room. He enjoyed playing pool in the evening and watching soccer on the tvs.

Staying in Old Town

Neighborhood Profile
Old Town
Few Edinburghers live in the Old Town, but its labyrinth of dank alleys and steep streets suggests this was not always the case. Today, it’s mostly visitors, tartan-flavored souvenir shops, and pipers that you’ll find on its cobbled streets. This is the place to get a feel for Auld Reekie (Old Smelly), as the town was once nicknamed, and stroll the Royal Mile, the thoroughfare that links the castle with the royal palace – two of Edinburgh’s great set-piece attractions. But there’s lots more exploring to do here down dozens of little alleys, or wynds, while at night the city’s busiest clubs erupt along the Cowgate which is closed to traffic for this purpose.
