Arriving with 30 school children in tow for an educational visit, the guys on check in were very efficient and polite! Rooms were ok and spacious however mattresses and covers left a bit to be desired! Bathrooms were clean however! But the rooms overall could have been cleaner! Sadly the noise levels from outside the hotel did affect my sleep... More

Loved this hostel stay. The first night was a bit rough with some late Pub guest continuing the party in outside the door of our hallway. But it's to be expected on a Friday night in a hostel, so we easily overlooked it. Reception had even warned us it could get loud. We were a party of 6 staying in... More

We stayed in a room with 3 beds and a private bathroom. It was ok. Nice location near The Royal Mile, Grassmarket and the castle. The pub in the same building was a bit loud during the night. I might stay here again if the price is competitive. There are better places for a bit more money.

Thanks for taking the time to review us. We are Visit Scotland accredited 5 star hostel accommodation. As you correctly said, if you pay more cash then you could stay in a hotel - with a very different vibe to a hostel. We are glad you enjoyed your stay. Thanks Jayne @ SCH More

I ended up staying here for a total of 3-nights. The location is great; located in the Cowtown "district" but centrally located (walking distance) to the Royal Mile, Edinburgh Waverley railway station, the Grass Market, etc. I'm sure the rates are seasonal; my 1st night I reserved a "shared accommodations" which consisted of a total of 8-beds. I ended up... More

Thanks for taking the time to review us. It's really appreciated. You would never have had a room with only 1 bed in it - it's something we don;t provide. If you were under this impression, please email me on jayne@smartcityhostels.com with your booking reference number and which channel you booked through. You were upgraded from a typical 'private room'... More

An extremely well located hostel 10 minutes away from Edinburgh Waverly train station; as a Londoner myself, It took me a good 4.5 hours to get there so a short walk to the hostel was much appreciated! The hostel itself was clean and comfortable; the only downside was the carpet in the room which had sticky chewing gum on the... More

Thanks for reviewing. We are glad you had a really good time here. Please send me more details (room number etc) to jayne@smartccityhostels.com so I can have the carpet deep cleaned. We are in the process of strengthening our free wifi connection - we are sorry it wasn't up to scratch when you stayed. We hope to see you again.... More

Great placement and wonderfull staff. Less than 1 minute to Royal Mille by walking but quite and silent. Bad point: There is only Wifi signal at the bar. They also offer a Buffet Breaksfeast but it's more interesting having it anywhere outside.

Even though not being the youngest guest and had no stayed at hostels since my teenage, it wasn't too bad to stay there. Location is perfect, the bar is handy, all staffs are friendly and so on. Negative part of the hostel is...it is really noisy at court yard late at night. Apparently Scottish government bans alcohol consumption outside space... More

Thanks for taking the time to review us. We are glad you enjoyed your stay with us. It does get noisy - especially at this time of year given how busy the city is and how busy SCH is. You were upgraded to give you more space. You were actually only a few doors away from where your original room... More

I loved staying here, the rooms were clean, smart and the staff were more than happy to answer all my ridiculous questions at any hour of the day! Being on a debut solo trip, safety is always on my mind and I always felt at ease here - also their laundry was much better than the last place I tried... More

I stayed here for 2 nights, and was greatly disappointed. The place was dirty, overcrowded, noisy, soulless, and the worst of all, the management were very rude and unhelpful upon complaining. Terrible way to run a people focused business. Have no respect for their guests what so ever. The negative reviews are all true! I wish i had paid more... More

Great location. Staff very friendly and helpful. Room was very clean. The restaurant and bar downstairs was nice. Wi Fi was fine. The place has a convenient laundry facility as well. Price was reasonable for the location as well.

Staying in Old Town

Neighborhood Profile
Old Town
Few Edinburghers live in the Old Town, but its labyrinth of dank alleys and steep streets suggests this was not always the case. Today, it’s mostly visitors, tartan-flavored souvenir shops, and pipers that you’ll find on its cobbled streets. This is the place to get a feel for Auld Reekie (Old Smelly), as the town was once nicknamed, and stroll the Royal Mile, the thoroughfare that links the castle with the royal palace – two of Edinburgh’s great set-piece attractions. But there’s lots more exploring to do here down dozens of little alleys, or wynds, while at night the city’s busiest clubs erupt along the Cowgate which is closed to traffic for this purpose.
