4 of 5 stars Reviewed today NEW

Stayed here for 4 nights over the August bank holiday weekend. Chris and Sinead made us feel very welcome. It's a good location very near the beach, away from the hustle and bustle of the city. Just 20 minutes away on a good bus route. Room was clean with a shower ensuite. Large lounge on the 1st floor with TV.... More

We've stayed at the Straven a few times when visiting the Fringe. As always the service was excellent, the breakfast superb and the hospitality and help provided of the highest order. To be able to walk down to the beach each morning and yet be only a 20 minute bus ride from the centre of Edinburgh has to be the... More

Just returned from a short break at Straven guest house and would highly recommend it. Spotlessly clean, good sized room with HUGH bed and beautiful en suit facilities. Spacious dining room, ample breakfast cereals, fruit, yogurt, toast, tea and coffee and a piping hot cooked breakfast. The host Chris and Sinead, were lovely and put you at ease with their... More

This traditional Edinburgh House is tastefully decorated and spotlessy clean. The rooms are a good size the en suite large. Cuddly white towels and white sheets make everything very inviting. The breakfast choices are amazing. Apart from the usual, fruit, Joghurt, juices, cereals, you are offered little Porridge shots with apple And cinnemon! Lovely!! The Porridge And cooked breakfast is... More

I stayed at Straven Guest House, run by a young couple who took over from their parents (-in law) quite recently. They were very welcoming, friendly and knowledgable about the place and Edinburgh. The house is beautifully situated near the long Portobello/Joppa promenade, which offers a non negligable advantage: while I was staying in April, it got quite warm (around... More

Friends had booked the Straven at the end of a long walking holiday and we joined them for their last week in Edinburgh knowing nothing about the local area - Portobello ("Porty"). Edinburgh has a BEACH - no, really, I'm not making this up - and best of all it's about 50 yards from the Straven's front door! Location heaven... More

Good sized room with an excellent en-suite. Wonderful breakfast. The area is very peaceful at night so an undisturbed night is pretty much guaranteed. Sinead and Chris who run Straven are the most friendly and helpful people, who made us feel really welcome. A bus runs from round the corner into central Edinburgh, or you could drive in and pay... we have booked this guest house for five nights probably one of the best we have stayed in anywhere. Sinead welcomed U.S. and was very helpful on advising us of places to eat drink and the local transport in to the city. We met Chris at breakfast the next morning extremely pleasant and helpful the choice of breakfast was extremely... More

Great little B&B in the Portobello area - about 20-25 minutes from downtown Edinburgh by bus. The promenade along the seashore is less than a 1/2 block away. Our room was small (as to be expected from a Victorian style B&B) but well furnished and comfortable. The young couple that run it a delight. Very helpful, friendly, and aiming to... More

5 of 5 stars Reviewed July 21, 2015

We stayed at this excellent lodging last summer and reserved a room for three nights this past June. We knew that the house had changed hands (to the daughter and son-in-law) and wondered if we would experience the same quality. Rest assured that this remains the perfect stay: immaculate large rooms, a comfortable bed, and huge breakfast selection, and the... More
