I was asked to not smoke in the bedrooms, I do NOT smoke. I cannot stand the smell of it. I was approached by the male owner who was rude and abrupt because he saw my window open, and no apology was given.

3 of us stayed here overnight before travelling to London the next day. It was about a 10/15 minutes walk to waverley train station. The accommodation was not far from the theatre but it was down a quiet street away from any noise. The bedroom was spotless with really comfortable beds. The owners were lovely and helpful. We didnt have... More

Overall okay but rooms and shower room could do with some updating. Window in room did not open, so it was very stuffy. We had a room on the top floor up loads of stairs which is not ideal for a retired couple with knee problems.

We really enjoyed our stay. Our rooms were lovely and the location was perfect. Freddie and Fiona were very accommodating by starting a light breakfast for us early since we had to catch a flight. We are so happy we chose this hotel over others. I have already reccommend The Broughton to a few of my clients.

Excellent hospitality, very friendly and helpful.Comfortable and clean room. Location is great, breakfast is delicious. There is no elevator but the stairs are not too steep.A very recommended place to stay in Edinburgh.

A cozy, charming place with 6 rooms. Friendly, hospitable owners (Fiona and Freddie) get to know their guests and offer advice and suggestions on how to get about. We, however, know Edinburgh well and enjoy staying in this part of the City for 2 nights, near to the theater, local pubs and restaurants, shopping center, and Calton Hill for its... More

We took a room for 3 adults, but it was really too small for 3; plus the bathroom had a window that would not open & with limited ventilation, 3 showers made this un-A/C room stuffy even with the cool weather outside. The breakfast was nice, but I was dissappointed that when we arrived there was no one there (we... More

Hi: Thanks for the comments I am sorry we were not here for your arrival but as I explained to you prior to your arrival we had a function to attend that day at 1:15 pm Hence we left the very simple and easy to follow entry instructions to our hotel that have worked perfectly well for over 8 years!... Booked the Broughton for an overnight stay, the welcome was great and the owners were very friendly and helpful. They checked into taxis on our behalf which was kind. The room was clean and well equipped. Breakfast choice was good and the food quality excellent. Would definitely recommend to anyone looking for a place to stay. Located very close to... More

We booked this hotel last minute for a 3 night stay in Edinburgh in June 2015 and it turned out to be our best decision. We were quite happy with restaurant recommendations of our hosts and appreciated their help in planning our day trips. The location is great and allows you to walk to both Old Town and Leith as... This place was so comfortable. Like staying in your aunt and uncles house, although I think Freddie is a better breakfast cook! Would totally stay here again!! Did I mention there is a house black lab?!

Staying in Broughton & Calton

Neighborhood Profile
Broughton & Calton
Lying where grandiose New Town townhouses give way to malls and utilitarian housing, Broughton and Calton have long been transitional neighborhoods with a mixed identity. It’s here that Edinburgh’s gay village found a home in the 1980s. But gay culture is anything but overt along bustling epicenter Broughton Street; even if polished pubs, hip bistros, smart delis and art galleries all speak of affluent good taste. The top of Leith Walk is more ragged. This major thoroughfare boasts a famously gritty gay club, as well as a strip of good Indian restaurants. Regal Georgian and Victorian townhouses preside over largely deserted streets in Calton, where only the occasional restaurant or hotel brings much life. Even so, a steady trickle of idlers and picnickers pass by to climb Calton Hill for its wide-open lawns, wonderful city views, and curious monuments – an Athenian-style temple among them.
