Booked the Broughton for an overnight stay, the welcome was great and the owners were very friendly and helpful. They checked into taxis on our behalf which was kind. The room was clean and well equipped. Breakfast choice was good and the food quality excellent. Would definitely recommend to anyone looking for a place to stay. Located very close to... More

We booked this hotel last minute for a 3 night stay in Edinburgh in June 2015 and it turned out to be our best decision. We were quite happy with restaurant recommendations of our hosts and appreciated their help in planning our day trips. The location is great and allows you to walk to both Old Town and Leith as... This place was so comfortable. Like staying in your aunt and uncles house, although I think Freddie is a better breakfast cook! Would totally stay here again!! Did I mention there is a house black lab?!

We stayed 4 nights and this hotel was a very good choice. Its location is a nice area with pubs and restaurants and closed to exhibitions. The rooms were clean and beds confortable. The owner was pleasant to talk with and the service was of high quality. Breakfast good.

My daughter and I stayed at the broughton hotel for two nights as we were going to a concert at the playhouse. The hotel is situated at the bottom of a quiet road and traffic is very minimalistic so it is very peaceful. We were greeted by Freddie and his lovely labrador dog at the door. Freddie took our case... More

Travelled up for the marathon festival and needed a central location which would not be too crazy and chaotic so we could rest in advance of the race. Made to feel very welcome by our host. Received email contact from the owner so they could ensure they were there for our arrival. Room was clean and tidy with TV &... More

The central location with free parking gives this place the edge. The owner is very friendly and helpful with information and tips on good places to eat. Our room was comfortable though small (only just room to get passed the bed to the ensuite). The shower room could do with an update, although everything works OK. It's a great location... More

Lovely little guesthouse. Very welcoming host Freddie, nothing too much trouble. Clean and comfortable room in quiet end of town but only 10 mins walk from amenities. Great cooked breakfast freshly prepared to order.

Comfortable welcoming and characterful .It makes a welcome change from the large hotel chains to find an independent Hotel that delivers all the 'trimmings' found in the chains and does it with character and quality rarely achieved elsewhere.

Staying in Broughton & Calton

Neighborhood Profile
Broughton & Calton
Lying where grandiose New Town townhouses give way to malls and utilitarian housing, Broughton and Calton have long been transitional neighborhoods with a mixed identity. It’s here that Edinburgh’s gay village found a home in the 1980s. But gay culture is anything but overt along bustling epicenter Broughton Street; even if polished pubs, hip bistros, smart delis and art galleries all speak of affluent good taste. The top of Leith Walk is more ragged. This major thoroughfare boasts a famously gritty gay club, as well as a strip of good Indian restaurants. Regal Georgian and Victorian townhouses preside over largely deserted streets in Calton, where only the occasional restaurant or hotel brings much life. Even so, a steady trickle of idlers and picnickers pass by to climb Calton Hill for its wide-open lawns, wonderful city views, and curious monuments – an Athenian-style temple among them.
