The central location with free parking gives this place the edge. The owner is very friendly and helpful with information and tips on good places to eat. Our room was comfortable though small (only just room to get passed the bed to the ensuite). The shower room could do with an update, although everything works OK. It's a great location... More

Lovely little guesthouse. Very welcoming host Freddie, nothing too much trouble. Clean and comfortable room in quiet end of town but only 10 mins walk from amenities. Great cooked breakfast freshly prepared to order.

Comfortable welcoming and characterful .It makes a welcome change from the large hotel chains to find an independent Hotel that delivers all the 'trimmings' found in the chains and does it with character and quality rarely achieved elsewhere.

We enjoyed our stay at the Broughton Hotel. Our room was clean, comfortable and had everything we needed. Breakfast was generous, cooked to order and yummy. Fiona and Freddy were helpful with advice and local knowledge. Good range of cafes and restaurants in nearby Broughton St. Hotel was walking distance from Princes St, Edinburgh Castle and Calton Hill.

Hotel was very clean (you could smell fresh washing on entering), owners were very friendly and helpful, bed was very cosy and comfortable (as were pillows). Location great - just round the corner from The Playhouse theatre, there are lots of cafes and bars and restaurants a stones throw away, 10 mins walk to Princes St and St Andrews Sq.... More

We booked a short stay in the Broughton Townhouse after looking for a more authentic local feel to what is the beautiful city of Edinburgh. We were willing to pay the prices requested, despite the cheaper option offered by the main chain hotels. Due to our flights, we had arranged to arrive at the hotel quite late at night, with... Hi: Sorry about your mishaps with your flight but as you rightly say we are a small 6 bedroom hotel with just Freddie and I doing nearly everything ourselves so that is why as stated on all on-line booking forms our latest check-in 11:30 pm and never 2 am sorry but we could not operate a 24/7 check-in procedure and... We stayed three nights at this place, and we really enjoyed the quiet clean rooms, and the comfortable beds.Rooms and beds were a bit narrow though, especially room 2. The location was perfect, 5 minutes walk from North Bridge and Princes'street. The breakfast was traditional and the choice was great among different possibilities.

The staff were courteous and helpful (I think they were the owners), place was comfortable and convenient - good wifi and breakfast included. This place is more like a Bed/Breakfast than a hotel - it's a townhouse that has been cut into different rooms with private baths. I'd recommend it.

Staying in Broughton & Calton

Neighborhood Profile
Broughton & Calton
Lying where grandiose New Town townhouses give way to malls and utilitarian housing, Broughton and Calton have long been transitional neighborhoods with a mixed identity. It’s here that Edinburgh’s gay village found a home in the 1980s. But gay culture is anything but overt along bustling epicenter Broughton Street; even if polished pubs, hip bistros, smart delis and art galleries all speak of affluent good taste. The top of Leith Walk is more ragged. This major thoroughfare boasts a famously gritty gay club, as well as a strip of good Indian restaurants. Regal Georgian and Victorian townhouses preside over largely deserted streets in Calton, where only the occasional restaurant or hotel brings much life. Even so, a steady trickle of idlers and picnickers pass by to climb Calton Hill for its wide-open lawns, wonderful city views, and curious monuments – an Athenian-style temple among them.
