Couldn't believe the bowls of berries, yummy, plus a wide selection of both cooked and cold breakfast items. Comfortable room with lovely view out to Arthur's Seat. Only downside having to carry our bags up 2 flights of stairs as there's no lift. Easy walking distance to the Royal Mile and Arthur's Seat. Staff friendly and helpful. Free wifi.

Stayed in the hotel with my boyfriend this month, and we were pleasantly surprised. We are a young couple so we decided to go with a cheaper option but as close to the city centre as possible, and this hotel was the right choice. At the time we arrived, the room was not ready yet, but a gentleman from the... More

Kenneth McKenzie is a converted dorm close to the University of Edinburgh and close to places to eat, currency exchange places, and shops. It is possible to walk to city centre from there. It is a Bed and Breakfast and has a nice dining room completed with a cook and waitress. The room price includes the breakfast. I had a... More

We stayed one night at Kenneth MacKenzie hotel for B&B. Check in and check out could not have been easier and staff really helpful. Bedroom basic but had everything you would want. Bed very comfy and breakfast great, with staff willing to please. Thank you!

I stayed here before about 3 years ago and loved it so booked again for a two night stay hoping it would be just as good, I wasn't disappointed. The staff are all very pleasant and friendly, the rooms are cosy and comfy bed. If there was one slight negative it was that some of the cooked breakfast was a... More

If the website had indicated that this was formerly student accommodation then we wouldn't have touched it with a barge pole. The rooms are poky, the furniture is ancient and the mattress in our room would have broken my back. It might be cheap but our double room looked nothing like the photo on the website Didn't even bother to... More

Although the hotel is quite basic it is in a very good location just a short stroll from the main attractions, castle, dungeons pubs etc. I have no complaints about my stay, the bed was so comfortable and bathroom was spotless. Great value for money, I will definitely stay here again...

The rooms are old student accommodation so they are quite basic and a little cramped. But if, like me, you are happy with somewhere to sleep at night and spend very little other time in the room, then the location and price puts this place streets ahead of much of the competition. It is very central and just a few... More

Staying in Southside & Holyrood

Neighborhood Profile
Southside & Holyrood
Many of Edinburgh’s student hangouts gather around university buildings in Southside, the sort of neighborhood that supports a long string of second-hand shops and eateries serving ethnic food for just a few pounds. In August the student population is replaced by vast numbers of boisterous visitors here for the Fringe, Edinburgh’s world-class comedy and arts festival which headquarters itself here. Flanking Southside are two great parks. The Meadows is a vast flat and sporty space where football, rugby, tennis, cricket, croquet, and golf often all take place side by side. Kids in its big playgrounds add to the joyful noise. Far bigger and much wilder, Holyrood Park extends to the east and provides a real hike up Arthur’s Seat, but the district is best known as the site of Scotland’s Parliament and its premier Royal Palace—and their steady stream of sightseers.
