This is where I have an issue with the Tripadvisor rating system. This would be a 3.5 (7/10) but I had to give a 3 as not quite an 8/10. Anyway, enjoyed my stay. Good clean room, comfy bed, tv with decent selection of channels and nice tasting selection of tea and coffee. The bathroom was small and there was... More

This is a dorm room as part of a university instead of a B&B. The room is basic and clean. The parking garage was about 0.5 miles away. The breakfast was amazing out of all the places I stayed. I even tried their authentic haggis and black pudding which were so tasty! If I had three things to gripe about... More

Location is great and the breakfast is also very good. The hotel rooms were quiet and clean. The stairs are a bit narrow and the room fare is slightly on the higher end. The wash basin didn't have a water mixer which was a problem as the cold water was very cold and the hot water was well scalding.

What a wee steal. Small comfortable room, very clean with tea/coffee and shower gel etc. Breakfast to out some 5*'s to shame. On the bus route to get you to the city centre and beyond. Staff very helpful.

Former student accommodation but retains the charm. No frills. No Lift. No bar. No sound insulation. Absent receptionist. Lilliputian en suite facilities. By way of contrast breakfast excellent with friendly competent staff. Overall best avoided.

Friendly staff, clean rooms, very basic but ideal really. Central location - easy access to Waverly and town centre. Breakfast was great! Good selection and something for everyone. Ideal for an overnight stay. Most importantly - free Wifi!

I was surprised when I arrived to stay here, someone else booked it for me. It is a renovated dorm but the room was clean and comfortable. We were on the 4th floor and it was a bit warm but we opened the window. The shower could use a shelf for your personal stuff. The bathroom is small but I... More

Kenneth Mackenzie is a fantastic place to stay in Edinburgh. It's location alone makes it an ideal place to stay when you are in the city. It is a short walk from everywhere - the Royal Mile, Edinburgh Castle, Arthur's Seat, Holyrood Park, etc. There is no place to park your car there but you don't need one when you... More

Couldn't believe the bowls of berries, yummy, plus a wide selection of both cooked and cold breakfast items. Comfortable room with lovely view out to Arthur's Seat. Only downside having to carry our bags up 2 flights of stairs as there's no lift. Easy walking distance to the Royal Mile and Arthur's Seat. Staff friendly and helpful. Free wifi.

Staying in Southside & Holyrood

Neighborhood Profile
Southside & Holyrood
Many of Edinburgh’s student hangouts gather around university buildings in Southside, the sort of neighborhood that supports a long string of second-hand shops and eateries serving ethnic food for just a few pounds. In August the student population is replaced by vast numbers of boisterous visitors here for the Fringe, Edinburgh’s world-class comedy and arts festival which headquarters itself here. Flanking Southside are two great parks. The Meadows is a vast flat and sporty space where football, rugby, tennis, cricket, croquet, and golf often all take place side by side. Kids in its big playgrounds add to the joyful noise. Far bigger and much wilder, Holyrood Park extends to the east and provides a real hike up Arthur’s Seat, but the district is best known as the site of Scotland’s Parliament and its premier Royal Palace—and their steady stream of sightseers.
