Reception was great, really friendly, organised and helpful and we were even offered help with our bags, which was greatly appreciated. There is a shelf of reading material and snacks can be purchased. Security is a priority on this site and the opportunity not to carry valuables around all the time was welcome. Add to this the excellent location near... More

Don't stay here if you need to sleep. Spent 4 nights here in July and managed about 4 hours sleep per night. If you have a room facing Cowgate you get the noise from the Brewdog pub on the ground floor plus traffic and revellers echoing in the canyon like street. If you have a room at the back you... More

First of all the lady receptionist was rude. She left the poor new guy on his own, she was definitely not bothered that there was a queue up until the door and people were waiting around half an hour to check in... then you go into the building and it definitely looks like a council house.... the doors fall shut... Stayed here with friends on a stag party for 2 nights. We had an apartment to ourselves which was clean and well presented for what it is. This is not premium accommodation but it is a decent place to lay your head for a reasonable price. I took advantage of their car parking too - be sure to pre book... More

First of all the staff are lovely so thank you. However, my experience was extremely bad. My room stank of fags, the carpet was filthy (see photo) and the whole place was pretty disgusting. I bought some air freshener which helped. I was woken at 5 am by drunk men shouting obsenities. I don't know why staff in reception did... More

Booked this for budget travel since I was only staying in the city overnight to watch a concert. Accommodations in Edinburgh is ridiculously expensive so booking this at 18 GBP was a steal. I booked via Agoda and the site charged me the full amount. When I got to reception, they told me that Agoda only charged the deposit and... More

A major con of the Euro Hostel is the face that it a has blankets on the bed! It has a pathetic "blanket" that is more like a thick sheet. Even in the middle of summer Edinburgh can be as cold as 7 degrees Celsius a night and even wearing my warmest clothes to bed I would still often wake... More

We booked this so we could go the highland show 19th - 20th June and still be central Edinburgh. The hostel is a short walk from Waverley station. Minutes from the grass market and royal mile! Castle etc.We booked one twin room for two nights for £118, the hostel is divided up into private apartment blocks with a shared bathroom... More

We visited this hostel (it is NO HOTEL!) in June 2015. It is situated quite near the City centre and the Old Town, but in quiet surroundings, so it is all right for the price. Our information from Booking.com was vague about the bathroom facilities, which only was to be found in the corridor. The hotel tried to charge us... More

Staying in Old Town

Neighborhood Profile
Old Town
Few Edinburghers live in the Old Town, but its labyrinth of dank alleys and steep streets suggests this was not always the case. Today, it’s mostly visitors, tartan-flavored souvenir shops, and pipers that you’ll find on its cobbled streets. This is the place to get a feel for Auld Reekie (Old Smelly), as the town was once nicknamed, and stroll the Royal Mile, the thoroughfare that links the castle with the royal palace – two of Edinburgh’s great set-piece attractions. But there’s lots more exploring to do here down dozens of little alleys, or wynds, while at night the city’s busiest clubs erupt along the Cowgate which is closed to traffic for this purpose.
