We had booked through an extremely well known on-line late bookings site - only to discover the on-line company [we had used them on numerous occasions without incident] had somehow failed to book the room we thought we had made with the hotel we had chosen... so there we were in Haymarket, exhausted, over-loaded, famished and trying desperately not to... Good value hotel in a lovely area of Edinburgh. The breakfast and room was excellent. Only reason not to give five stars was the lack of free parking which ended up meaning quite a bit extra in car park costs

I can thoroughly recommend this establishment situated as it is, so conveniently close to the railway station, the tram stop and bus network. Remus and his team made us so welcome, taking my (very) heavy suitcase upstairs and bringing it down again when required and providing us with a room that was immaculately clean, quiet (looking over back garden), warm... We must have stayed on an off week or something as the other reviews praise the food and staff so highly whereas I found them both below average. I do think the person manning the reception was very grumpy and instead of making us feel welcomed, our morning wishes were ignored and he appeared quite rude, which is unfortunate. The... More

We spent a Saturday night at this hotel as my husband had arranged a birthday meal for me in Edinburgh. Rooms were decorated to a good standard and spacious. The only issue was the bathroom door that kept sticking at the top. Breakfast was lovely but at busy times it is not big enough to hold all guest so you... More

We decided to stay one more night in Edinburgh and thus made a last minute booking in The Lairg. We would mention a wonderfull and spacious clean room, a somptous Breakfast and a helpful staff. On the negative side, the access to Wifi was impossible in our room on the second floor through the weakness of the routers.

Positiv: - quite near to city center - right next to bus/tram station - clean - large and clean room - friendly staff - good value Not so good: - bed - clairaudient Didn't try breakfast. Overall we were happy with our stay at the Lairg. We can recommend it for a few nights.

I chose the Lairg because it is close to city centre and affordable. My room had single bed with desk, nightstand, full-length mirror, wardrobe, cable TV and wifi. The was no lift/elevator so the manager had to carry my bag up the stairs to my room.. The bathroom was functional, but the shower head was inflexible and shower stall is... More

My friend and I stayed at this delightful hotel for 3 nights, we were towards the end of a 4 week stay in the UK so had plenty of comparisons to make. We found everything about the Lairg excellent. The whole hotel is tastefully decorated and spotlessly clean. Our room was spacious ( by UK standards), clean and comfortable. We... More

The hotel is walking distance to everything, if you don't like walking taxi rank up the road as is the rail, buses and trams. Too easy! The hotel manager was very helpful in giving us directions about transport and where to eat. Rooms are immaculately clean and breakfasts delicious. Thank you. We would certainly come back to this hotel.

Staying in West End

Neighborhood Profile
West End
Prevailing winds meant that most cities that grew in industrial Britain had their most desirable neighborhoods to the west – upwind of factory fumes. Edinburgh was no exception, with its wealthiest citizens settling in its West End and leaving behind grand Georgian townhouses, private gardens and genteel crescents. These backstreets remain as dignified and sleepy as ever, and most of the action here lies along the district’s busy main roads. Lothian Road connects to southern Edinburgh and harbors a vague entertainment district: three theaters and the city’s main indie cinema. All attract a select crowd, the sort who appreciate the Saturday Edinburgh’s Farmers’ Market around the corner. The West End’s other great thoroughfare, Shandwick Place, is dominated by trams trundling out to the suburbs and airport, and shoppers picking up last-minute items before hopping aboard.
