This was our third stay at The Lairg. We had a new basement room this time, was wary at first but it was lovely. Quality bedding and Towels, very clean and spacious. Staff helpful. Wish more hotels offered the breakfast that you get here. Fresh, cooked to order, plentiful and really good produce. Well worth a stay. .

We had a basement room which was decorated fine, shower & bathroom were ok. However, when we returned to our room, people were smoking directly outside of our window and our room was smelled horribly of smoke. This was just the lower level smoking hangout. I complained to the office (to another smoker) who got them away from our room... More

I stayed here for one night and the only real complaint was the value for money. I did feel the room was fairly basic considering the price and I had originally booked this my partner and I therefore was under the impression it was one double however due to other reasons I had to share the trip with a relative... When this hotel was booked my wife and I were looking for a hotel close to the city, transport, and easy to find form the airport. This hotel did it all. We caught the tram from the airport, got off at Haymarket, and walked approx. 200 yards to our hotel by crossing the road and walking the short distance. We... More

We were asked to pay upfront before being shown our room, very odd. We were then ushered out of the building by the manager and shown to building two doors down the street into a below street level basement room. The room was clean, well decorated and benefitted from a large shower room. But was dark, cold, had a ridiculously... More

Great location, relaxed staff, while the place is shabby (no chic in sight), its very functional. Plus the room was large, the beds were reasonably comfortable and there were big windows so lots of natural light. The bathroom was tiny but thats not uncommon in the UK. We had to stay a couple of extra nights unexpectedly and they dealt... More

We had booked through an extremely well known on-line late bookings site - only to discover the on-line company [we had used them on numerous occasions without incident] had somehow failed to book the room we thought we had made with the hotel we had chosen... so there we were in Haymarket, exhausted, over-loaded, famished and trying desperately not to... Good value hotel in a lovely area of Edinburgh. The breakfast and room was excellent. Only reason not to give five stars was the lack of free parking which ended up meaning quite a bit extra in car park costs

I can thoroughly recommend this establishment situated as it is, so conveniently close to the railway station, the tram stop and bus network. Remus and his team made us so welcome, taking my (very) heavy suitcase upstairs and bringing it down again when required and providing us with a room that was immaculately clean, quiet (looking over back garden), warm... We must have stayed on an off week or something as the other reviews praise the food and staff so highly whereas I found them both below average. I do think the person manning the reception was very grumpy and instead of making us feel welcomed, our morning wishes were ignored and he appeared quite rude, which is unfortunate. The... More

Staying in West End

Neighborhood Profile
West End
Prevailing winds meant that most cities that grew in industrial Britain had their most desirable neighborhoods to the west – upwind of factory fumes. Edinburgh was no exception, with its wealthiest citizens settling in its West End and leaving behind grand Georgian townhouses, private gardens and genteel crescents. These backstreets remain as dignified and sleepy as ever, and most of the action here lies along the district’s busy main roads. Lothian Road connects to southern Edinburgh and harbors a vague entertainment district: three theaters and the city’s main indie cinema. All attract a select crowd, the sort who appreciate the Saturday Edinburgh’s Farmers’ Market around the corner. The West End’s other great thoroughfare, Shandwick Place, is dominated by trams trundling out to the suburbs and airport, and shoppers picking up last-minute items before hopping aboard.
