My husband and I stayed for 2 nights in September. Lisa and Jack were very welcoming hosts. Ellesmere House is a lovely Victorian property on the edge of a 36 hole pitch and putt course on a quiet road a short walk from central Edinburgh. Our room was very comfortable, lovely decor, very clean with complimentary chocolates, port and water.... More

My partner and I stayed from 3rd September till 6th September. This was our first visit to Edinburgh and we were not sure where to stay, but reading all great reviews on Ellesmere House, we decided to stay here. What a lovely find, Lisa and Jack were delightful hosts. We stayed in room four which was overlooking the garden at... More

We had a great stay in Ellesmere House. The location was fantastic. We stayed here for the Military Tattoo and everything was a short walk away (the bus stop is also right outside, but we didn't need to use it). Plus, it overlooks a golf course and there is a lovely park nearby that you can walk through to get... More

We found Ellesmere House on TripAdvisor, but by total coincidence good friends of ours from elsewhere stayed there as well ~ a month before us, and also loved it. It is on a quiet street across from the Meadows (and a chip and upt golf course on the meadows if you're inclined). Great location - about 1/2 mile from the... More

This place is the best place to spend a holiday in Edinburgh. Central location allows you to walk to every interesting area of the city. It overlooks the public golf course and offers a nice and relaxing view. The owner is friendly, helpful and attentive to every detail of our stay. Prices adjusted to the service offered. No doubt about... More

Stayed here end of july/beginning of august for the commonwealth games and fringe and what a great choice we made! Lovely 10 min walk to the city centre, amazing cooked breakfast in a beautiful dining room! Lisa was a great host and jack is a beautiful dog who is very well behaved! I wouldn't stay anywhere else in Edinburgh and... More

This select B&B is well situated for any event in Edinburgh with a 10 minute walk to the city centre. We stayed for 4 nights for the Edinburgh fringe festival and had a wonderful time. The welcome was very pleasant (especially from Jack!) and the room was excellent with a very high standard of deco and comfort. Lisa could not... More

Lovely warm welcome to an old charm building with all the modern touches. Huge comfortable bed in a big high ceiling room decorated in crisp white and blue, was lovely. We were given a guide book for the area told if we needed anything at any time just ask. Port and chocolates were left in the room which was a nice... More

A truly beautiful BnB with period features as well as modern amenities that make for a wonderful stay. Hosts of Ellesmere House are tremendously helpful and go out of their way for guests. Jack The Lab is hilarious and very welcoming too. Peaceful location at night allowed for great sleeps after exploring the nearby city. Lovely park across the road... More

After spending four days in London we were ready for some peace and quiet. We were welcomed before reaching the top step to the B&B. The room was wonderful and we were offered tea which was served on a beautiful tray with shortbread cookies. We enjoyed breakfast and were given many choices. Our stay there was perfect in every way,and... More

Staying in Southside & Holyrood

Neighborhood Profile
Southside & Holyrood
Many of Edinburgh’s student hangouts gather around university buildings in Southside, the sort of neighborhood that supports a long string of second-hand shops and eateries serving ethnic food for just a few pounds. In August the student population is replaced by vast numbers of boisterous visitors here for the Fringe, Edinburgh’s world-class comedy and arts festival which headquarters itself here. Flanking Southside are two great parks. The Meadows is a vast flat and sporty space where football, rugby, tennis, cricket, croquet, and golf often all take place side by side. Kids in its big playgrounds add to the joyful noise. Far bigger and much wilder, Holyrood Park extends to the east and provides a real hike up Arthur’s Seat, but the district is best known as the site of Scotland’s Parliament and its premier Royal Palace—and their steady stream of sightseers.
