Proprietor Lisa is absolutely fantastic. Our taxi drove up to the door and she was there with a warm welcome. The room as well as the entire place was impeccably well decorated and kept up. The beds and showers were amazing and only outdone by the breakfast. As for locations, few can do better. The area is relatively quiet with... More

I loved the room we stayed in, very grand. Had all the normal pieces plus some nice extra's. Port and chocolate! The lady of the house was very welcoming, cooked great breakfast and even let us use her golf sticks and walk her lovely dog!

Very pretty city everything within walking distance apart from Yacht but that's just a bus ride away. Guest house was beautiful very friendly with all the facilities you need. Close to the city we walked to most places. Cooked breakfast set you up for the day. No on site parking but we managed to park across the road which was... More

This is a really lovely B&B, and made for a very enjoyable weekend away. It is very homey with gorgeous decor. The complimentary chocolates were much appreciated! But it ticks all the necessary boxes: clean, tidy, warm, comfy beds and quiet. The bathroom was immaculate and so was the bedroom. Lisa was lovely and very friendly and cooked a delicious... More

We had a wonderful stay at Ellesmere House. We were close to everything! Lisa was a terrific host, and we loved being greeted with a delicious breakfast, and Jack the dog, each morning. Thank you for making us feel so welcome in your home.

Beautiful room, beautiful house, lovely breakfast with a really friendly owner. Me and my girlfriend couldn't have enjoyed our stay more. With only a 15 minute or so walk to the Old Town you couldn't ask for a better situated lovely place to stay.

I had a great experience with Ellesmere house. The breakfast was always phenomenal and Lisa was an exceptional hostess. She helped direct me on my visit to Edinburgh, and pointed out great pieces of history that helped enhance my trip greatly. The room was cozy and comfortable. I will return here on my next trip to Edinburgh.

Ellesmere House is, plain and simple, the greatest of Bed and Breakfast establishments! It is an extremely charming Victorian house, nicely decorated and most comfortable. Our room was spacious and very clean, and the property is located an enjoyable walk to the downtown area. Lisa was a wonderful hostess and provided us with a very delicious and more-than-adequate breakfast each... More

Staying in Southside & Holyrood

Neighborhood Profile
Southside & Holyrood
Many of Edinburgh’s student hangouts gather around university buildings in Southside, the sort of neighborhood that supports a long string of second-hand shops and eateries serving ethnic food for just a few pounds. In August the student population is replaced by vast numbers of boisterous visitors here for the Fringe, Edinburgh’s world-class comedy and arts festival which headquarters itself here. Flanking Southside are two great parks. The Meadows is a vast flat and sporty space where football, rugby, tennis, cricket, croquet, and golf often all take place side by side. Kids in its big playgrounds add to the joyful noise. Far bigger and much wilder, Holyrood Park extends to the east and provides a real hike up Arthur’s Seat, but the district is best known as the site of Scotland’s Parliament and its premier Royal Palace—and their steady stream of sightseers.
