The Novotel hotel is a pretty standard, but solid hotel with a great location in Edinburgh. The hotel is well equipped, clean and tidy and a good choice for a weekend stay in Edinburgh. We were a family of four and the bigger room we had worked very well for us. The breakfast is expensive relative to what you get... More

Room was very clean, major error in putting the toilet in a separate "closet" from the bathroom as it was not ventilated and smells lingered. The Pool facilities were a joke (and main reason we booked novel) it was barely 6m in length and felt crowded with more than 2 people. Jacuzzi was cold and changing "room" was a phone... More

My room was too warm. The air-con did not appear to be working properly, only operating on fan mode. I had to strip off the heavy duvet and just use the cover. Also the Novotel's own feedback system does not work properly. Perhaps it rejects any other than 4 or 5 star ratings?

We stayed two nights here. We were disappointed by the included breakfast which was not of a high quality - and didn't bother with it at all the second morning. The breakfast area was also not large enough for the number of guests at the time. The girl at who was seating people was trying very hard but having to... More

Visiting Edinburgh for the first time, and it will not be the last, booked the Novotel because of its central location. Arrived late on Friday evening thanks to a delayed flight the welcome and check in was fine. The room over looked Edinburgh castle which was a nice surprise. Because of the location, it was very easy to get around... More

My partner and I stayed in the Novotel for three nights in May. The welcome by staff was very friendly and extremely professional and the staff on Reception couldn't have been more attentive and helpful throughout. The room was very clean with all the usuals like toiletries, hairdryer, iron etc. It was extremely hot during the night though and the... More

Enjoyed a lovely stay here with our family. Great location as it is within walking distance to all of the action but is still quite centrally located and just on the outskirts of it all so you don't get all of the street noise from the bars. Accommodation was nice for a family of four. In our room, the toilet... More

Room was prefect on arrival, with the fruit, flowers, chocolates and sparkling wine which I had ordered - but over the week, housekeeping let the show down, with milk and decaf coffee being left, and by the end of the week we had dirty spoons not being removed and the bins didn't have any plastic bags in them! The toilets... More

We walked everywhere from this hotel. It was a great location to walk to the castle. Lots of hills, but close to everything. The hotel is modern, novel, and fresh in it's approach and style. Clean, good food, nice pool, and courteous staff.

Staying in Old Town

Neighborhood Profile
Old Town
Few Edinburghers live in the Old Town, but its labyrinth of dank alleys and steep streets suggests this was not always the case. Today, it’s mostly visitors, tartan-flavored souvenir shops, and pipers that you’ll find on its cobbled streets. This is the place to get a feel for Auld Reekie (Old Smelly), as the town was once nicknamed, and stroll the Royal Mile, the thoroughfare that links the castle with the royal palace – two of Edinburgh’s great set-piece attractions. But there’s lots more exploring to do here down dozens of little alleys, or wynds, while at night the city’s busiest clubs erupt along the Cowgate which is closed to traffic for this purpose.
