I stayed here for three nights, and it was exactly what I was expecting. Rooms where clean (they dont chance your sheets if you are staying a while, my roomie had been there a few weeks and he never got new sheets) staff were friendly and I felt safe and there were lockers to put your bags in (you need... Reviews are misleading. Room didnt have working heat, chillout room smelled horrible, bed was uncomfortable as hell. I have been backpacking in over 10 countries and this is easily the worst. Had an instance where a staff member literaly flippled out on the kitchen goers because previous people didnt wash there dishes. She threatened to kick us all out and... More

My brother and I spent two nights at budget backpackers. It was my first time in an hostel. The location in the old city is perfect. And its right accross the famous grassmarket with plenty of cheerful pubs. The two bed bedroom was clean and sober. I you don't mind to share toilets and shower with other guests than this... More

This is a fantastic hostel. Dorms are very up to date and exceptionally clean and warm too. Bathrooms were clean and well kept. Staff could have been a bit more friendlier but they did help us with a problem while staying there and kept a smile.

This is a GOOD hostel. I've stayed in bad ones, this one is prime! I felt very safe, key cards for entry into the main area, and again into the rooms, as well as an occupant card for proof of stay. Luggage drop was convenient and safe. The rooms were very well kept, and each bed had a locker and... More

This place was great! One of the best hostels I've been in so far. It had an awesome, friendly, fun and safe atmosphere you don't often find in hostels. The 6-bed dorms are super cheap, very clean and nicely desgined. The Cafe/bar was awesome! Cheap, good food, cheap drink, good music and good whiskey! And a pool table is always... More

I've stayed at this Hostel twice. Walking distance from the train, super cool vibe, great little cafe for tea and oatmeal in the morning. Its literally right in the center of Edinburgh and super affordable. I've met lovely people from all around the world staying here. Highly recommended for hostel living.

Me and my friends went for Scotland trip and we booked one room for one night. Location is good , only 5 min walking distance from Edinburgh Castle. Nice staff as well. But there is no complimentary breakfast available there.

This hostel's cool. Nice rooms and friendly staff. Its location is definitely the biggest plus point: near everything in a bustling area but not too noisy either. Our room (a 4-person private room) was pleasant. There was a plug socket, USB socket and light for each bed, and a few lockers for storage space. The showers and bathrooms were ok.... More

Staying in Old Town

Neighborhood Profile
Old Town
Few Edinburghers live in the Old Town, but its labyrinth of dank alleys and steep streets suggests this was not always the case. Today, it’s mostly visitors, tartan-flavored souvenir shops, and pipers that you’ll find on its cobbled streets. This is the place to get a feel for Auld Reekie (Old Smelly), as the town was once nicknamed, and stroll the Royal Mile, the thoroughfare that links the castle with the royal palace – two of Edinburgh’s great set-piece attractions. But there’s lots more exploring to do here down dozens of little alleys, or wynds, while at night the city’s busiest clubs erupt along the Cowgate which is closed to traffic for this purpose.
