Brilliant hostel. I got a twin room was really clean, provided towels, free storage. The staff were always really helpful with advice about what activities to do. It's really Central you can see the castle from the door of the hostel. Food is cheap, not great but cheap! Good place for students or groups of students. The hostel was surprisingly... More

This is a clean, bright hostel but I'm actually surprised to see so many glowing reviews here. We stayed here April 30- May 1 of this year and found it extremely noisy- the street noise and the noise within the hostel itself kept us awake much of the night. There was even a dog barking and a seagull squawking outside... More

Hi Rick. Thanks for taking the time out to review us. Our location is bang in the middle of the city so unfortunately we can't control any noise outside. We have now installed secondary glazing into our rooms that face the street to stop the street noise disturbing out guests. We hope you will stay with us again and please... More

Staff very nice and helpful and efficient. Perfect location, especially if you are looking for a night out, as it is very close by all the pubs. Also very close to Edinburgh castle and all other city centre tourist attractions. Beds really comfy and very clean. Hostel overall very clean with cool and friendly vibe to it. Only reason I... We spent 4 nights in a 8 mixed bed room and it was great! It's clean, warm, there are lockers for personal things, plugs for every bed, space enough... The kitchen is well provided, clean... Decoration is great! And Staff is very nice and helpful ;) Very good location, only 5 minutes to Royal Mile and there are lots of... More

Good hostel - not the comfiest, newest, or cleanest - but decent. Edinburgh itself is amaze, and way better than Dublin. Best parts about it was it's great location (a bit of a hike from the train station so pack lightly!), and the free walking tours. Don't miss it!

I actually Stayed here in March 2014, Its in a great location, rooms are spacious, have lockers and good security throughout. The staff are amazing, so friendly! Definitely recommend doing the pub crawl & trivia, you wont be disappointed. Kitchen isn't always open which is frustrating and they (at the time) had no utensils. Its in a prime location, you're... I thought I was back in California hearing Spanish everywhere. The economy must be bad in Spain for half of the hostel employees were from there. Budget Backpackers also offer deals for those wanting to stay for a long long time. It was party central in the cafe, bar, and kitchen which were always packed. It has a super location... More

Hostels are suppose to have SHARED ROOMS, BATHS AND KITCHEN. During my stay(two days) they closed the kitchen at 8 pm -normally closes at 10 pm - for a french group ONLY. The rest of the people did't have access to the kitchen to cook for the rest the night. If you want to get more money look another way... More

Hi There . We did unfortunately have to close of the shared kitchen between 8.00pm and 9.00pm to accommodate a large group as it would have been too crowded for everybody . We did put signs up in advance and the group did run over a bit . We very rarely have to close the kitchen off and we do... More

The four bed dorms were large, with good facilities (lamp, locker, USB charger and power outlet) for each bed. We'll equipped kitchen, and heaps of options to chill out around the place. The Cafe had great options for breakfast, and the food was cheap and tasty. Location was perfect as well, with everything being no more than 10 mins walk... More

Hi Nathan Thanks for the great review not sure what the alarms where in the night but looking into it. Sometimes hot water can take a couple of minutes to come through if you are on the top floor as boilers in the basement but we are upgrading our shower system to ensure customers don't have this inconvenience. Thanks again... More

First of all, the location is near of everything: in the middle of the Old Town and just a short stroll away from the railway station. Also, the Grassmarket, located next to the hostel, has a good set of different kinds of cozy restaurants. Secondly, the staff of the hostel are really friendly and helpful about everything. Thirdly, the bar/cafe... More

Staying in Old Town

Neighborhood Profile
Old Town
Few Edinburghers live in the Old Town, but its labyrinth of dank alleys and steep streets suggests this was not always the case. Today, it’s mostly visitors, tartan-flavored souvenir shops, and pipers that you’ll find on its cobbled streets. This is the place to get a feel for Auld Reekie (Old Smelly), as the town was once nicknamed, and stroll the Royal Mile, the thoroughfare that links the castle with the royal palace – two of Edinburgh’s great set-piece attractions. But there’s lots more exploring to do here down dozens of little alleys, or wynds, while at night the city’s busiest clubs erupt along the Cowgate which is closed to traffic for this purpose.
