Last month I traveled with a group of students to the UK and we stayed in this hostel for two nights. The hostel is well located but the service, the buildings, the rooms and toilets are awful. The place was dirty, my roommate's sheets were not clean (they had a blood stain!) and there was a nasty smell in the... More

Granted, I stayed there a couple of years ago, but I was there for 4 nights. The first morning, I woke up covered in scratches. Upon inspection, there were Kirkby grips (Bobby pins) in my bed. I shook them out and remake the bed. That night, I went out on the town, so slept in the next morning. I couldn't... More

Firstly, I'll gibe you the negatives, of which there are many; - It is a converted row of tenements, and it is still pretty slum like. - The stairwell smells like those of a multi story car park - There is no lift, so it is difficult when you have luggage/mobility problems - The beds are really basic and creak... I stayed 3 nights over the new year period and it was a pleasant experience. The staff were friendly and helpful and it really is a hostel with a difference in being that it's many different flats. PROS beds are comfy, showers are amazing, rooms were clean CONS no common lounge area in flats to socialize with others, no lockers... More

Good for large groups. Few bathrooms for a lot of people - 2 showers for 14 people. We had a kitchen which was semi-equipped for basic pasta. Bunk beds were super basic and not that comfortable. The interior is pretty old and hasn't been recently rennovated. It is in quite a central area of bar, pubs and clubs. However, it... More

£20 for a key deposit but you cannot check out at 0800 when the office is supposed to open as the staff don't show up. I called their number and were told in broken English they would be another 30minutes. Poor service

I stayed in Cowgate for 3 nights and I regret not being able to stay more. The hostel is very clean and well organized and the staff are super friendly. Location is perfect. Would definitely come back!

I stayed at the Cowgate Hostel for 3 nights recently. I found the check in service to be easy and straightforward and the staff could not do more to help me. The staff were always extremely pleasant and helpful throughout my stay. The rooms were comfortable and extremely clean at all times and I felt that my possessions were very... More

Cowgate hostel made me and my friends' stay in Edinburgh much more pleasant. Located in the heart of the city and near everything you need, it provided the perfect accommodation and allowed us to enjoy Edinburgh to its full potential. The rooms were clean and comfortable while the kitchen was spacious and very well equipped. All in all it was... More

Brought a large group here recently. Excellent location, spacious rooms, great cooking facilities and very well kept. The staff were very friendly and always at hand to help. Would recommend to anyone staying in Edinburgh on a budget!

Staying in Old Town

Neighborhood Profile
Old Town
Few Edinburghers live in the Old Town, but its labyrinth of dank alleys and steep streets suggests this was not always the case. Today, it’s mostly visitors, tartan-flavored souvenir shops, and pipers that you’ll find on its cobbled streets. This is the place to get a feel for Auld Reekie (Old Smelly), as the town was once nicknamed, and stroll the Royal Mile, the thoroughfare that links the castle with the royal palace – two of Edinburgh’s great set-piece attractions. But there’s lots more exploring to do here down dozens of little alleys, or wynds, while at night the city’s busiest clubs erupt along the Cowgate which is closed to traffic for this purpose.
