An excellent choice for young and/or wild tourists who are willing to tolerate some extra noise. To me, it was all worth it because of the excellent location and good service. However, a constant beeping that lasted throughtout our 48-hour stay almost drove us crazy - and we weren't the only ones as I woke up to a man yelling... More

I don't understand all the bad reviews on here. I found the Cowgate Hostel to be simple, clean and good value for money. The staff were very friendly and helpful, the bed was comfy, everything worked. My friends and I were out all day so only really needed a place to sleep and shower and it was perfect for us.... I was visiting the university open day with my 17 year old son. We had a twin room which was more like a prison cell. Metal bunk beds with metal screws sticking out and was so flimsy we moved my sons mattress onto the floor at 2pm, when we were woken up (for the third time) by some lads screaming... More

This is definitely not for those people who like a nice place to rest. The double room was through a dark alley style corridor and door after door. Quite low budget interiors. It could be good for students. The price was also more than nicer neighboring hostels and there was no breakfast provided. There was wifi in the bedroom which... More

I've stayed in numerous hostels, but this was the first one decorated like a heroin shooting gallery. Overpriced. The hallways and WC were narrow, dark and severely littered with trash. The room was simply nothing but a bed- drab and flimsy, and a dirty cupboard. I didn't stay long enough to check for bugs...and when I tried to get my... More

We stayed only for a day over here.It is very near to royal mile. just 5 mins walk distance.Self catering kitchen was ok.Utensils were not not sufficient and some had almost reached their end of life. Bathrooms and rooms were clean.

I needed a place to stay during a short vacation and this place met my needs. I have stayed at other Hostels in Edinburgh, but have not yet found a place I want to stay at again. I was satisfied with the 70$ I paid for 5 nights. The dorm room they placed me in was on the second floor... More

The only good thing about this hostel is its location. Was really overpriced and shared facilities were minimal. For a hostel they really need to start improving as there are so many more of better quality. No real fun zones either. No bar, small hang out area.

This hostel is in an excellent location, only a few minutes walk from the Royal Mile! The rooms are in the apartment building next to the reception office. We stayed in a four bed room that overlooked the beer garden across the street. The room was spacious and comfortable. There are three toilets and two showers shared by the rooms... More

Location of the hostel is fantastic, with royal mile so close, and bars & pubs for nightlife just in the opposite way of the street (eg, Brewdog pub). Guys, if you are young and you need a place cheap (10pounds/night) and you want to stay in the center of the scene of the city center, well this is totally your... More

Staying in Old Town

Neighborhood Profile
Old Town
Few Edinburghers live in the Old Town, but its labyrinth of dank alleys and steep streets suggests this was not always the case. Today, it’s mostly visitors, tartan-flavored souvenir shops, and pipers that you’ll find on its cobbled streets. This is the place to get a feel for Auld Reekie (Old Smelly), as the town was once nicknamed, and stroll the Royal Mile, the thoroughfare that links the castle with the royal palace – two of Edinburgh’s great set-piece attractions. But there’s lots more exploring to do here down dozens of little alleys, or wynds, while at night the city’s busiest clubs erupt along the Cowgate which is closed to traffic for this purpose.
