Hey, it is a hostel, a youth hostel, and it is cheap. What do you expect from it? Yep it is not that clean, yes it is not that beautiful but you got what your price is getting for you I needed it for a week, They kept my luggage, were nice with me, I had access to the internet... More

So we arrived and the location was fantastic, right in the centre, especially for the fringe which is what we were there for. The staff were really nice and we could leave our bags with them until we could check in. They then took us to our rooms, and they were really nice, we were in a six man dorm... More

I normally stay in Hilton hotels so staying in a hostel for my stag was a bit daunting. However I was pleasantly surprised. It was clean, dry, comfortable and in a great location. You also are the only ones staying in your "flat" so you can leave things under lock and key! The downside was that the shower was either very hot... More

A group of 20 of u stayed here on a stag. We had our own private apartment with kitchen and bathrooms and a number of rooms (2x 6 bed, 1x 4bed, 1x twin, 1x double). Great set up as you don't disturb other guests! The location is perfect for nightlife, right across from the three sisters and only seconds away... More

An excellent choice for young and/or wild tourists who are willing to tolerate some extra noise. To me, it was all worth it because of the excellent location and good service. However, a constant beeping that lasted throughtout our 48-hour stay almost drove us crazy - and we weren't the only ones as I woke up to a man yelling... More

I don't understand all the bad reviews on here. I found the Cowgate Hostel to be simple, clean and good value for money. The staff were very friendly and helpful, the bed was comfy, everything worked. My friends and I were out all day so only really needed a place to sleep and shower and it was perfect for us.... I was visiting the university open day with my 17 year old son. We had a twin room which was more like a prison cell. Metal bunk beds with metal screws sticking out and was so flimsy we moved my sons mattress onto the floor at 2pm, when we were woken up (for the third time) by some lads screaming... More

This is definitely not for those people who like a nice place to rest. The double room was through a dark alley style corridor and door after door. Quite low budget interiors. It could be good for students. The price was also more than nicer neighboring hostels and there was no breakfast provided. There was wifi in the bedroom which... More

I've stayed in numerous hostels, but this was the first one decorated like a heroin shooting gallery. Overpriced. The hallways and WC were narrow, dark and severely littered with trash. The room was simply nothing but a bed- drab and flimsy, and a dirty cupboard. I didn't stay long enough to check for bugs...and when I tried to get my... More

Staying in Old Town

Neighborhood Profile
Old Town
Few Edinburghers live in the Old Town, but its labyrinth of dank alleys and steep streets suggests this was not always the case. Today, it’s mostly visitors, tartan-flavored souvenir shops, and pipers that you’ll find on its cobbled streets. This is the place to get a feel for Auld Reekie (Old Smelly), as the town was once nicknamed, and stroll the Royal Mile, the thoroughfare that links the castle with the royal palace – two of Edinburgh’s great set-piece attractions. But there’s lots more exploring to do here down dozens of little alleys, or wynds, while at night the city’s busiest clubs erupt along the Cowgate which is closed to traffic for this purpose.
