I REALLY wish I'd read the other reviews before I booked this place! Our experience (we stayed in double room without en-suite) was awful. I think they must be riding on earlier good reviews (Lonely Planet?!) because the management have gotten seriously lazy. I was shocked at how dirty our room was - the sheets were kind of yellow-tinged with... More

This hostel has an unbeatable location, within easy distance of many of Edinburgh's main tourist sites. It is surrounded by lots of tourist shops and restaurants. We stayed in a dorm for eight, and the room was full for the one night we stayed. It was pretty busy, with people in the hallways and common areas. In our room, the... More

All in all, it was a good place to stay at for a night. We were 11 people, put up for a night in 2 dorm rooms in Brodies 1. The whole place had a very own smell, but you could easily get used to it. Our bedroom was not full, all the other 5 guys from our group could've... More

We checked into a double room at this hostel in November 2007. This is the worst hostel we have ever seen. Our room was utterly disgusting, we couldn't imagine anything worse. The carpet was filthy, the sheets were dirty and looked like they had never been cleaned - hairs everywhere and worse, the hostel felt like it was full of... More

This place was disgusting. Despite Lonely Planet giving it a decent review, all of the reviews on this site were right (sadly we looked at them afterwards). The bathrooms were disgusting (no hot water, no soap, malfunctioning handryer) and looked like they hadn't been cleaned in weeks. Our double room was tiny (1 foot around the bed with a lamp... More

We stayed in a double bedroom and soon regretted it. The dirt that was everywhere was disgusting, my boyfriend refused to take his socks off in the room. There was crewing gum on the walls as well as actual holes in the walls. Thats right HOLES the size of your fists, these had been filled with plastic bags. The bathroom... More

We paid 42 pounds for three people in a four-people room. The hostel is very hard to find, because it is so small. The whole hostel is dirty ... the carpets are dirty - the toilets are so dirty you wont even use them. the best: we, three males, booked a four-people room and our fourth roommate tends out to... Certainly not worth a 5/5. The staff is inept, and people, who do not work at the hostel, live there permanently. The place has no character at all. Bed sheets had cigarette burns in them, blankets were not washed before we arrived ("we only sometimes wash the blankets") and had blood stains on them. Showers were COLD and full of... More

The head staff guy "Michael" is quite an unpleasant person, but the other staff seem fine. The room was exceedingly spartan but we thought we would give it a go. The mattress was was awful, almost like sleeping on rocks, the walls were paper thin, the traffic noise from outside was very loud (make sure you get an inner room).... More

Great location, dormitory room was okay, but otherwise this place had little going for it. In particular, the bathrooms were just horrible.

Staying in Old Town

Neighborhood Profile
Old Town
Few Edinburghers live in the Old Town, but its labyrinth of dank alleys and steep streets suggests this was not always the case. Today, it’s mostly visitors, tartan-flavored souvenir shops, and pipers that you’ll find on its cobbled streets. This is the place to get a feel for Auld Reekie (Old Smelly), as the town was once nicknamed, and stroll the Royal Mile, the thoroughfare that links the castle with the royal palace – two of Edinburgh’s great set-piece attractions. But there’s lots more exploring to do here down dozens of little alleys, or wynds, while at night the city’s busiest clubs erupt along the Cowgate which is closed to traffic for this purpose.
