Brodie's Hostel was very well located right on the Royal Mile and that is an experience within itself! However we didn't have the best of stays and my partner and I felt like we could of/should of got a little bit more for our money as we paid for a double room for over a week. In saying that it... This hostel has well location and good price, but doesn't have free wifi and if you want to pay is very expensive. The smelly room bothers me all the time, the bed is ok, and is a quiet hostel. The kitchen is very small. They offer to guests free coffee and milk powder.

Brodies hostel is well located, it is on the Royal Mile, in the heart of Edinburgh's old town. I spent one week at this hostel and I should've went somewhere else as location was not important for me. The room was smelly, the toilets were dirty, and the corridors as well. You had to buy a prepaid card if you... More

When I read the reviews for this hostel I was skeptical but it was the only one available for the dates we chose as it was when a six nations rugby match was being played. Upon arrival we were greeted by a friendly woman and were give the keys to our rooms. The rooms were very clean and tidy. There... More

Honestly, my girlfriend and I were very excited about exploring the city of Edinburgh. Unfortunately, our first impression of what turned out to be a lovely city was this hostel. From the outset, it was very easy to miss, as the presence on the streetfront was the width of a door. Upon opening the door, a foul odor hit us... More

Location is quite near the airport bus stop and train station though up a hill. Toilets have strong smelling odor all the time. Kitchen always fully occupied and clutter with dirty dishes etc. Long term guests make it worse. Very long flight of Stairs to climb. No free WiFi - It is the ONLY ONE in town WITHOUT free Wifi.... I work in the hotel industry and I'm a very well travelled person. I have stayed in small little hostels in side streets in Vietnam and even then they are better then this hostel. Firstly, the sink in this four dorm room does not work, dry toothpaste is still left from the last stay. Eww. The beds are uncomfortable and... More

THis was the hostel we stayed in Edinburgh, the best about this - is that its on the main road (royal mile) and ends with the castle. It was a small place. very cheap . Noisy for sure due to its main road. But the rooms were OK . I did feel some bugs.. but the wash place was all... More

I don't normally stay in hostels but with the prices of hotels in Edinburgh we decided to risk it and hire a private room with bathroom at Brodies. We were pleasantly surprised, it was nice, clean and the reception staff was very friendly and made us feel welcome. One of the staff was the current owner himself who was very... More

Staying in Old Town

Neighborhood Profile
Old Town
Few Edinburghers live in the Old Town, but its labyrinth of dank alleys and steep streets suggests this was not always the case. Today, it’s mostly visitors, tartan-flavored souvenir shops, and pipers that you’ll find on its cobbled streets. This is the place to get a feel for Auld Reekie (Old Smelly), as the town was once nicknamed, and stroll the Royal Mile, the thoroughfare that links the castle with the royal palace – two of Edinburgh’s great set-piece attractions. But there’s lots more exploring to do here down dozens of little alleys, or wynds, while at night the city’s busiest clubs erupt along the Cowgate which is closed to traffic for this purpose.
