I was only here for one night with a friend in a shared 8 bed mixed dorm over Hogmanay period as we couldn't get into one we wanted. It was smelly, dirty, no facilities included, no wifi or breakfast. We payed the same price as we did in other better hostels in Edinburgh. Definitely not worth the money or stay.... More

We booked to stay at this hostel due to the crazy prices of most other hotels around as it was new year. We where very nervous due to some bad reviews but found our room to be clean and very warm. We stayed in the second section of the hostel down the road from the main hostel in a double... More

I stayed for one night in a private room with shared bathroom / toilet. I have traveled extensively, often in developing / lower income countries and nothing compares to the disgusting experience I had at Brodie's Hostel! I am fine with basic accommodations, but this was dirty, smelly, and dark. The toilets were full of waste and the showers were... More

The rooms are decent, the sleep quality wasn't a problem. There were only two power outlets in a room for eight people, though. The bathrooms were pretty uncomfortable and somewhat dirty/smelly. The kitchen utensils were poorly cleaned. The staff wasn't always helpful and even rude, sometimes. The location is very good, though. It won't be an unpleasant stay if you're... More

The place was very central, which was convenient to go to places. The place was old, smelly and dirty, even after we had left we still had the hostel stench on our clothes. The shower was not functioning well, very weak water and the shower doors were all broken. The staff and residents there seem to live there like in... More

First off the place is filthy, was not too happy with the stench or look. Their beds are quite uncomfortable, the room I stayed in only had two plugs on the other side of the room. The taps for some of the sinks fail to work. Some of the staff were helpful while others were just rude.

The staff is really cool there, they're quite all not from scotland, so they can be travellers like you. We had a private room, quite small but enough to sleep. It was clean too. The common aera are not ultra clean but not dirty too. Prices are pretty cheap and the emplacement is perfect you're near from everything. Wifi is... More

I checked over the reviews on my train up to edinburgh on the site prior to check in. The first one I read was 'worse than prison'! I was really expecting somewhere grim. I was suprised at what I found. Yes, the place is a bit of a dive. It's smelly in the hallways, someone has defiantly been sick on... More

Horrible hostel. Cold showers, bad beds, unfriendly staff, even chancing toilet paper was too much effort. They speak bad English and are rude. Rooms are dirty. Only the location is nice. There are enough hostels around, so don't stay here.

Spent a week here between more permanent accommodation and was surprised by how good a price I got considering the location. The room was basic but clean and warm at night. My outer room wall was undressed stone which I quite liked. I had a window facing the street but I didnt find the noise too unbearable. Noisy on the... More

Staying in Old Town

Neighborhood Profile
Old Town
Few Edinburghers live in the Old Town, but its labyrinth of dank alleys and steep streets suggests this was not always the case. Today, it’s mostly visitors, tartan-flavored souvenir shops, and pipers that you’ll find on its cobbled streets. This is the place to get a feel for Auld Reekie (Old Smelly), as the town was once nicknamed, and stroll the Royal Mile, the thoroughfare that links the castle with the royal palace – two of Edinburgh’s great set-piece attractions. But there’s lots more exploring to do here down dozens of little alleys, or wynds, while at night the city’s busiest clubs erupt along the Cowgate which is closed to traffic for this purpose.
