A very comfortable place in the quietest area of Edinburgh with the best selection of shops and restaurants. The rooms are very well appointed for a B&B with everything you would ever want but crowned with the warm welcome and the small decanter of Malt whisky. Vast selection of books and information on hand and an eclectic collection of paintings covering... More

I stayed here for two nights, and was very satisfied. Complimentary whiskey in the room was a nice touch! With pubs, cafes, and the famous Stand comedy club nearby, it's well situated. It's only a 15 minute walk to the station or the city centre. The staff were very helpful, knowledgeable, and friendly. Definitely would like to return.

What looked good on the Gerald's Website went far beyond expectations during a visit over the New Year's Holiday. With a great location in New Town; close to the Train Station and all the sights in Edinburgh, Gerald's Place is as warm and inviting as Gerald himself. We did not want for anything during our visit as Gerald, Marie and... More

We spent 5 nights here - a wonderful home away from home. Comfortable, cosy, nice touches with chocs and whisky in the room. Gerald is a charming and knowledgeable host, location is perfect to explore Edinburgh, within walking distance to everything. Special mention to Marie and Michelina who were so friendly and helpful. We would definitely return again.

Hogmany was all that I hoped. Thanks, in large part, to the inside track affording by reserving with Gerald and staying with Beverly. A great nights' rest with all the creature comforts ! Take the tram to St Andrews from the airport. Get to know the city and its engaging people. There are stairs, so be sure to ask if... More

Our family of 4 ; parents and 2 young adults, were so warmly and graciously welcomed by Gerald for the New Years Holiday that we immediately felt at home. Our visit to Edinburgh could not have been lovelier largely due to Gerald's impeccable attention to detail and superb skill in providing both attention when requested and privacy when needed. The... My dad and I had never been to Scotland before, and Gerald's Place could not have been a warmer welcome. The b&b has such a homey feel to it, and Gerald's hospitality is impeccable. He served us a homemade breakfast every morning, and he was happy to share his experience with Edinburgh and the surrounding area with us. The age... More

Gerald's Place is well situated for walking to the city and has home comforts that are a welcome touch to holiday accomodation. There were magazines, books and DVDs. There were several good restaurants within easy walking distance and we enjoyed lovely weather so explored Edinburgh by foot and on public transport. I would be more than happy to return.

Staying in New Town

Neighborhood Profile
New Town
Suits and shopping bags rule the streets of New Town, until after dark when strappy dresses come out to play. This is the city’s central business district with its smaller offices, clothes boutiques, and many of the city’s flashiest restaurants and ritziest clubs. The architecture along roads like George Street helps give it a swank and formal feel: it’s a planned Georgian development of regal townhouses, geometric squares, and self-important statues. But it’s also a very wanderable neighborhood, with a healthy bustle at almost any time of day and fine people-watching in places like St Andrew's Square which fills with picnickers around lunch. You’ll also find a series of cheerful basement bistros on Hanover Street, while dark Rose Street has something of the feel of an undiscovered back alley and is chock-full of characterful pubs and small independent shops.
