Just trying to get booked into this hotel has been a nightmare. Emails to reservations went unanswered; I could only get through to central reservations when I needed inhouse reservations to book wheelchair access (still don't know if I have an appropriate room booked); my confirmation email showed a greater amount than I was told on the phone; the payment... From the front this looks like an absolute gem. A converted church facade has all sorts of promise. However the story is different inside. It is a facade (and the only entrance) and it's a trek to most rooms including one section without a lift (I believe). The reality is that it's built in a large entertainment complex and utilises... We booked a five-night stay at the Glasshouse and were consistently disappointed by the hotel. This has nothing to do with the staff who was extremely pleasant despite the obvious lack of management. Our air conditionning unit was not working on the first night and we were kindly upgraded to another room. However, the hotel has obviously some structural problems... More

Stayed here for 3 nights at the end of the Fringe Festival in Edinburgh. After a bit of difficulty finding the place by car, we off-loaded our luggage and parked in the Q Park next door. We were two couples, one of whom was Platinum with Marriott, and it paid off. The check in by Alastair was quick and efficient.... More

Interesting hotel created from an old church in a good location opposite John Lewis. The hotel is a bit of a rabbit warren and the the bar is a bit strange, but generally it's quite a high standard, maybe not quite 5 star though. Rack rate shown on the front desk is a bit of a joke!

Check in was smooth and informative, our bags were carried to our rooms. We were however take through a service lift which was bizarre. We stayed in room 121 which surpassed all my expectations, the bath was massive and a real treat. My partner did book the romance package but was disappointed when the champagne and chocolate covered strawberries were... More

We arrived after an overnight flight and were disappointed that only 1 of our 3 rooms was ready for us until right before the 3 p.m. check in time, with the others ready thereafter. That said, the rooms were excellent, clean and modern. Among the top beds and showers I ever have experienced. The staff was accommodating, but they did... More

This was the perfect place to stay in Edinburgh in August, as it a short walk to Princes street, but a good distance from the a craziness on the Royal Mile, and most rooms surround a rooftop garden, and even my exterior facing room was very quiet, and also large with lots of natural light. The one crazy thing one... More

We stayed here for five nights on Marriott points. It was perfect! We had a standard room with two twin beds. The room was not large, but it was cleverly arranged to make great use of the space. The outside was a window wall with a fabulous view of the city and the sea beyond. The bathroom is classy with... More

I was lucky enough to stay at this hotel with a friend during the Edinburgh Fringe Festival. Having stayed in many hotels of different standards, I feel the Glasshouse deserves its great reviews but I'd not go as far to say it's of five star standard. Check in was relatively smooth although having arrived very early, the room wasn’t ready... More

Staying in Broughton & Calton

Neighborhood Profile
Broughton & Calton
Lying where grandiose New Town townhouses give way to malls and utilitarian housing, Broughton and Calton have long been transitional neighborhoods with a mixed identity. It’s here that Edinburgh’s gay village found a home in the 1980s. But gay culture is anything but overt along bustling epicenter Broughton Street; even if polished pubs, hip bistros, smart delis and art galleries all speak of affluent good taste. The top of Leith Walk is more ragged. This major thoroughfare boasts a famously gritty gay club, as well as a strip of good Indian restaurants. Regal Georgian and Victorian townhouses preside over largely deserted streets in Calton, where only the occasional restaurant or hotel brings much life. Even so, a steady trickle of idlers and picnickers pass by to climb Calton Hill for its wide-open lawns, wonderful city views, and curious monuments – an Athenian-style temple among them.
