Stayed here for the last few days of the festival and got a really good price. wasn't expecting much but was pleasantly surprised by the large, clean rooms, modern decor and helpful staff. The bar was excellent and particularly liked the lighting. never succeeded in getting the wi-fi to work and never ate at the hotel, but would go back... More

During Festival time difficult to find anywhere so my experience may not be typical. Room was tiny, shabby, stained curtains and lampshade. Bathroom so small the mini floor mat would hardly fit: you will be entering and exiting the shower sideways - be warned! However great bar and breakfast, even with some made to order items such as kipper available,... More

Unique small hotel at the end of the tram line from the airport. A 10 min walk from Princes Street so quite central. The food is excellent so if you don't want to go out in the evening the bar provided good food. I recommend the cheeseburger with hand-cut chips although the chips I had looked suspiciously like frozen chips.... More

Checked out of the hotel yesterday after a 3 day stay. Room was large and spacious, and the bathroom was large and updated. But the large bathroom mirror over the sink was missing, although all the brackets were there. I later learned that a message about the process for clean towels was attached to the missing mirror, so we had... More

On entering our room, someone had already been there and used the hand towel and soap and obviously been on the bed. Very disappointing after climbing up 70+ stairs to the very small room in the attic. Having booked the accommodation from Australia well over 6 months prior to travelling we would have expected a reasonable hotel room, clean and... More

We've tried to keep this report as objective as possible. It is designed to provide information mainly for travelers from Canada and the USA rather than to make any specific complaint about the hotel. We stayed four nights in a Superior Double room, so we had plenty of time to properly assess the room. The most positive things about this... More

I made two separate bookings for this hotel - one for July and the other for August. I was drawn to the hotel due to it's location and price - both of which were great! Upon arriving for my first visit in July, I was taken to my room which was on the top floor. As there was no lift... More

We booked this hotel from Australia and paid a whopping 351GBP (700AUD) for a standard double hoping for a great place to stay in Edinburgh. It was only when we got to the UK that we found out that the Fringe Festival was on. We rang the hotel immediately to see if we could get a refund, but they could... More

the service in this hotel is truly extraordinary. there was an exceptionally helpful young hungarian gentleman at the front desk who will make sure you get what you need. the rooms are clean and have plenty of light. if you're looking for a clean, fuss-free hotel located close to old town, this is it.

Only stayed one night during the Fringe to go to the Tattoo, but thoroughly enjoyed our all too brief stay. Had one of the larger rooms, with a lovely sitting area and views across to the Firth of Forth. The Place is one of those hotels which you possibly choose for location rather than for facilities. Next door to The... More

Staying in Broughton & Calton

Neighborhood Profile
Broughton & Calton
Lying where grandiose New Town townhouses give way to malls and utilitarian housing, Broughton and Calton have long been transitional neighborhoods with a mixed identity. It’s here that Edinburgh’s gay village found a home in the 1980s. But gay culture is anything but overt along bustling epicenter Broughton Street; even if polished pubs, hip bistros, smart delis and art galleries all speak of affluent good taste. The top of Leith Walk is more ragged. This major thoroughfare boasts a famously gritty gay club, as well as a strip of good Indian restaurants. Regal Georgian and Victorian townhouses preside over largely deserted streets in Calton, where only the occasional restaurant or hotel brings much life. Even so, a steady trickle of idlers and picnickers pass by to climb Calton Hill for its wide-open lawns, wonderful city views, and curious monuments – an Athenian-style temple among them.
