Every August we attend the festival for a week, usually by motorcycle though last year by car. Cars always present problems in Edinburgh but this hotel is in an area where if you are prepared to walk a few blocks, you can get cheap or free parking. Having stayed for some years at Pollock Halls, which is also good, we... More

NB: I HAD to choose a date in order to continue on with the review, but in actual fact my few days stay was before then. Positives: Great location for visitors to the International and Fringe Festivals... walking distances. Very clean rooms and communal spaces; helpful and friendly staff, in the main. Relaxed atmosphere. Good standard facilities. It's not TOO... More

A 25 minutes walk from the fringe festival, and comparing with hotels you can save money. Although there are some details that make the difference for a negative final impression. It is not acceptable that you have to pay 3 pounds to store your luggage. They have storage capacity, and you will have to make your check out but your... More

Thanks for reviewing We are sorry you had to wait in a queue to check out. Check in and check out times with a full house tends to be really busy and we do try to minimise this by using all desks possible. Thanks Jayne @ iQ More

Very handy for the nearby conference centre. Clean and comfortable, and much cheaper than the nearby hotels. It's student accommodation during term time, so only available in the university holidays. I took a single room with ensuite shower and shared kitchen/living space, which was fine. I was attending a conference at the EICC, which is around 5 minutes walk away.... More

Excellent hotel for a short break, walking distance to the city centre. Good access to transport, and easy to get to airport, and around town. Although basic, clean and comfortable, and reasonably priced.

If all you need is somewhere to rest your head during the festival, this is a perfectly fine option, at a reasonable price as festival prices go. We had a suite with a double bed and a kitchen. The bed was very comfortable and the kitchen worked. Ours happened to be a disabled suite, which means the bathroom was very... More

Thanks for taking the time to review us. You're absolutely correct - iQ is student accommodation the rest of the year round, and like all other student accommodation in the city, we open as guest accommodation in July and August. Thanks Jayne @ iQ More

Had a very good couple nights here at the end of a camping/road trip across Scotland. It is centrally located, clean, comfortable with very helpful staff. If you have a car you need to plan a bit ahead as parking is pretty difficult. We didn't mind the lack of air condition as some of the other reviewers, mind you the... More

This is our second stay at Smart IQ and again it did not disappoint. The perfect location for a stay in Edinburgh during the festival, the accommodation is clean and presentable with knowledgable, friendly staff. Fantastic value for money and we will most definitely stay again.

Staying in West End

Neighborhood Profile
West End
Prevailing winds meant that most cities that grew in industrial Britain had their most desirable neighborhoods to the west – upwind of factory fumes. Edinburgh was no exception, with its wealthiest citizens settling in its West End and leaving behind grand Georgian townhouses, private gardens and genteel crescents. These backstreets remain as dignified and sleepy as ever, and most of the action here lies along the district’s busy main roads. Lothian Road connects to southern Edinburgh and harbors a vague entertainment district: three theaters and the city’s main indie cinema. All attract a select crowd, the sort who appreciate the Saturday Edinburgh’s Farmers’ Market around the corner. The West End’s other great thoroughfare, Shandwick Place, is dominated by trams trundling out to the suburbs and airport, and shoppers picking up last-minute items before hopping aboard.
