Very comfortable hotel. Was able to leave my overnight bag at the hotel until check in time. Central to my needs in Edinburgh. Room was clean and was a good size. Staff were very helpful too. Will most definitely use again.

I have never come across such run down hotel. It was extremely dirty and filthy. It was too late to find anything else to stay otherwise I would move to another hotel. I have never written a complain before, maybe because it was never so bad, it made me very angry. I was scared to touch anything. I went to a... More

Much better than going to a Travelodge. Large rooms. Nice staff. Breakfast could have done with some hot food, but it had cold meats, cheeses, cereals and bread etc. Positioned in a residential area, so quiet, but just 5 mins from the main road into Edinburgh. Walk or bus or tram.

The communal area were lovely! Very clean and modern. The bedrooms we had were large with everything in them you needed but were tired and run down. For example there was stains all over the sofa in one room and cracked/looses floor tiles in the bathroom of another! They could have both done with a lick of paint! There is... More

Very historic. They were doing painting and updating - inconvenient. Seven flights of stairs to reach our room - no lift. The room was on the top floor; it had a wonderful view. However, it wasn't worth the climb. We needed to take a rest half way up. The staff was very helpful, even carried our luggage upstairs. Loved the... More

we stayed for two nights in a twin bedroom at the top floor -over 50 steps up so beware if you have problems with stairs. The room was poor with damp patches on wall and curtain was coming apart. On street parking was for residents and hotel did not provide a permit. We were suggested by staff to park in... More

Stayed here for 2 nights (Wednesday and Thursday night). Rang the doorbell a few times and did not get in until someone else was leaving the hotel. Then once you get the to the reception desk you have to ring another bell before getting to see anyone that works there. After checking in I was shown to be room on... More

As you walk through the door of the Ballantrae West End Hotel (after having to ring the doorbell) your eyes are met by a sexy looking staircase and a distinct lack of a reception desk. The decor is quirky and there's a comfy lounge/bar area on the ground floor. In terms of rooms, we stayed in a 'junior double room'... More

The hotel is pretty central. You can walk pretty much to every sight in Edinburgh. Our room was very nice, big, charming and classy. It had high ceilings, a fireplace, a sofa etc. Only the bathroom was a little downer. The staff was very friendly and helpful.

Stayed here for a long weekend 21 - 24 November. Beautiful building in need of some TLC. We had a lovely large room which was very quiet. The duvet on one of the single beds had a disgusting stain on it but this was changed immediately for a brand new one and the night porter was very apologetic. We discovered... More

Staying in West End

Neighborhood Profile
West End
Prevailing winds meant that most cities that grew in industrial Britain had their most desirable neighborhoods to the west – upwind of factory fumes. Edinburgh was no exception, with its wealthiest citizens settling in its West End and leaving behind grand Georgian townhouses, private gardens and genteel crescents. These backstreets remain as dignified and sleepy as ever, and most of the action here lies along the district’s busy main roads. Lothian Road connects to southern Edinburgh and harbors a vague entertainment district: three theaters and the city’s main indie cinema. All attract a select crowd, the sort who appreciate the Saturday Edinburgh’s Farmers’ Market around the corner. The West End’s other great thoroughfare, Shandwick Place, is dominated by trams trundling out to the suburbs and airport, and shoppers picking up last-minute items before hopping aboard.
