Very dirty and neglected. Not enough facilities (namely 1 WC for over 40 users). Friendly stuff and a good location but it does not make up for the dirt and the feeling of unsafety. Fire alarm went of a few times at night.

We booked our hen activities through henedinburgh.com which is linked to this hostel as our activities like pole dancing and cocktail making were based here in their dingy brown bar! Our activities didn't happen, they scammed us out of £27pp for 11 people for a cocktail master class that was just us sat at their bar while they poorly mixed... More

The service provided was great and the staffs were very friendly, an ideal place for a backpacker. Location wise is brilliant as located in the City Centre. Tourist attractions are easily accessible. It's best recommended for shopping lovers.

My friend and I have been backpacking for 3 months now and can easily say this is the worst hostel we've ever stayed in. The beds as extremely uncomfortable and the rooms are filthy! The walls clearly haven't been washed in years. The bathrooms are disgusting.. You can also see right through the showers.. No elevator.. Wifi never works. I... More

I was traveling for the first time alone and had not much money. Back then, 4 years ago the service was really nice and the atmosphere as well. I slept in an 8-bed-bedroom, it was a bit loud, but ok for the price. There is a kitchen where you can cook your own food and the hostel is located very... More

I have been coming to this hostel for the past 5 years, loving the lively atmosphere, the great staff, the decent price and the fantastic location. I hadn't been back in a while and almost wish I'd stayed away! The place is nothing like it used to be: junk strewn in every corner, a pillow that smelled so much that... More

The hostel is nice and has salsa classes every saturday evening. However, the service was really poor with the receptionist not assigning correct rooms and making us shift rooms 2-3 times in the middle of the night. The hostel is also a little far from city center

Hi Tushar, I apologise for having to move your room, I assure you it was not our intention to inconvenience you in the slightest, but sometimes when we are busy this is unavoidable. With regards to your comment proximity to the city centre, we are a 30 second walk from Princes Street which is the main shopping street in Edinburgh,... More

I made a booking online for the Caledonian Backpackers Hostel for myself and 3 others. I had an enquiry to make before we arrived and my email was answered immediately. Not alone did the girl who helped us, Olivia, answer me in a polite manner, she went above and beyond to cater to our requirements. I would like to thank... More

The place is an absolute dump and smells like a dead cat, everything is falling apart and from the looks of things it hasn't had a decent clean since the opening day in 1744. The bathrooms were the moldiest places I have ever laid my eyes on, there were no locks on the toilets, and we were given bath mats... More

I chose Edinburagh as my destination for my Birthday. I am an Irish man who brought with me a crew of boys. I Arrived on the Friday Evening, was greeted by the receptionist who was very understanding and kind. Next we were shown our rooms which were very clean and spacious. Also had separate lockers for people to store their... More

Staying in West End

Neighborhood Profile
West End
Prevailing winds meant that most cities that grew in industrial Britain had their most desirable neighborhoods to the west – upwind of factory fumes. Edinburgh was no exception, with its wealthiest citizens settling in its West End and leaving behind grand Georgian townhouses, private gardens and genteel crescents. These backstreets remain as dignified and sleepy as ever, and most of the action here lies along the district’s busy main roads. Lothian Road connects to southern Edinburgh and harbors a vague entertainment district: three theaters and the city’s main indie cinema. All attract a select crowd, the sort who appreciate the Saturday Edinburgh’s Farmers’ Market around the corner. The West End’s other great thoroughfare, Shandwick Place, is dominated by trams trundling out to the suburbs and airport, and shoppers picking up last-minute items before hopping aboard.
