My boyfriend and I are backpacking around the UK and booked this hostel last minute. We were a bit nervous after reading reviews online but went in with an open mind. The hostel itself was not that bad. It is really well located, right by the castle and not far from the train station. The room we stayed in (8... More

Great location, couldn't fault staff either. Perfect for Students at these prices. Bit messy at times if in bigger dorms - we travelled as a group of 20+ - but expected. Security is no issue. I'd go elsewhere if you're looking for clean and quiet. Good for students or backpackers. Showers were out of order when we were there, and... More

Me and my girlfriend stayed at Caledonian backpackers for one night at a room of 20something people and it was actually not bad. Although it was packed as it was Easter Holidays, we had some really good sleep and enjoyed the big kitchen as well! It is for sure good value for money :)

Hostel was not great for a variety of reasons, particularly safety. There is NO SECURITY to get into the building. Anyone from the street can walk in unnoticed. Additionally, there are no locks on the bathroom entrances, meaning anyone can walk right into the female bathroom, including people not staying in the hostel. As a woman, I felt unsafe. The... I can asure you there is a 24hour manned reception here in Caledonian. There may not be someone seen in reception however, they will be in the office behind reception desk with CCTV of a full view of reception at all times monitoring those entering and exiting. On that note, there is cctv heavily throughout the building and floors so... More

This hostel has great intentions, but just lacks to make it a great environment. I understand hostels aren't your typical five star hotel, but I felt this hostel was just terrible. The place was dirty, stained carpets, and dust everywhere. Even the inside of the lockers had stains and was overall unpleasant. When I went to take a shower there... More

This place is unbelievably dirty. You arrive at the hostel, cigarrete buds litter the entrance. You go up a set of dirty stairs, to arrive at a dirty room, with a stained carped, windows that haven't been cleaned in years, bedsheets that seem to have survived several world wars and walls that are mouldy. Speaking of mould, wait till you... More

Stayed at the Caledonian backpackers for a few nights! Great hostel and at an amazing price! The rooms were nice and warm and beds were super comfy! The staff were very friendly and very accommodating- they defiently made me feel at home! The salsa nights on Saturdays was so much fun! And after learning some moves had a few drinks... More

There was one of the terrible experiences I have ever had. everything in my room was dirty and they didn´t clean it. I do not recommend this Hostel at all. You have other better hostels in the city. Chek first the reviews always.

This hostel was an absolute shambles. When we arrived, we arrived into a room with no working lights and only two lightbulbs on one wall, which was barely suffcient to light half the room. The heating didn't work, and I was frozen the whole time I was there. The bathrooms were even colder, they smelt awful, never had any toilet... More

Hi Morag, the way you feel is completely understandable since our facilities back then were not functioning properly. All your issues have been addressed though as we are trying every day to improve the hostel. The heating is back on, wifi is stronger than ever, and our staff is finally working as a team. The only way to truly apologise... More

This hostel is dirty, dilapidated, unsafe, and quite franky weird. The wifi does not work, the rooms are FILTHY, the sheets were stained and seemed like they hadn't been washed before we arrived. The carpets haven't been cleaned for months, and the staff are rather strange. There was a nice Australian lady at reception at times however. The key cards didn't... More

Hello Emma, I am sorry about all this but at that time we had a lot of rooms without proper heating and our wifi was very weak. Basically our heating was fixed around mid February and our new optic fiber line for internet went on a bit after that so the place is much more enjoyable than it was before.... More

Staying in West End

Neighborhood Profile
West End
Prevailing winds meant that most cities that grew in industrial Britain had their most desirable neighborhoods to the west – upwind of factory fumes. Edinburgh was no exception, with its wealthiest citizens settling in its West End and leaving behind grand Georgian townhouses, private gardens and genteel crescents. These backstreets remain as dignified and sleepy as ever, and most of the action here lies along the district’s busy main roads. Lothian Road connects to southern Edinburgh and harbors a vague entertainment district: three theaters and the city’s main indie cinema. All attract a select crowd, the sort who appreciate the Saturday Edinburgh’s Farmers’ Market around the corner. The West End’s other great thoroughfare, Shandwick Place, is dominated by trams trundling out to the suburbs and airport, and shoppers picking up last-minute items before hopping aboard.
