Myself and three of my friends stayed recently @ The Caledonian Hostel. The hostel has a really cool vibe nice staff and great views of the Edinburgh Castle. Avoid the old creepy guy Kevin who lives in the hostel # creepy # pervert

I have been coming to this hostel for the past 5 years, loving the lively atmosphere, the great staff, the decent price and the fantastic location. I hadn't been back in a while and almost wish I'd stayed away! The place is nothing like it used to be: junk strewn in every corner, a pillow that smelled so much that... More

The hostel is nice and has salsa classes every saturday evening. However, the service was really poor with the receptionist not assigning correct rooms and making us shift rooms 2-3 times in the middle of the night. The hostel is also a little far from city center

Hi Tushar, I apologise for having to move your room, I assure you it was not our intention to inconvenience you in the slightest, but sometimes when we are busy this is unavoidable. With regards to your comment proximity to the city centre, we are a 30 second walk from Princes Street which is the main shopping street in Edinburgh,... More

I made a booking online for the Caledonian Backpackers Hostel for myself and 3 others. I had an enquiry to make before we arrived and my email was answered immediately. Not alone did the girl who helped us, Olivia, answer me in a polite manner, she went above and beyond to cater to our requirements. I would like to thank... More

The place is an absolute dump and smells like a dead cat, everything is falling apart and from the looks of things it hasn't had a decent clean since the opening day in 1744. The bathrooms were the moldiest places I have ever laid my eyes on, there were no locks on the toilets, and we were given bath mats... More

I chose Edinburagh as my destination for my Birthday. I am an Irish man who brought with me a crew of boys. I Arrived on the Friday Evening, was greeted by the receptionist who was very understanding and kind. Next we were shown our rooms which were very clean and spacious. Also had separate lockers for people to store their... More

Wow, where to begin?? Arrived Friday early evening, and there was no staff around. We were able to walk straight in off the street, and wonder round the hostel. Rooms unoccupied by doors wide open. Peoples bags and personal belongings there for the taking if we had been that way inclined. Finally got checked in, and our dorm was filthy.... More

Stayed here with a group of 12 lads for a friends stag party. We are in our 30's so you would say we are mature. Have stayed in hostels before but this was an experience. Doesn't seem to be any house rules as bar and music was still going at 7am in the morning. 2 power sockets in a room... More

Hi Robert, We're really sorry you didn't enjoy your stay with us, when we are busy the Caledonian is a very lively place and I apologise you were kept awake by other guests partying! My boyfriend and I are backpacking around the UK and booked this hostel last minute. We were a bit nervous after reading reviews online but went in with an open mind. The hostel itself was not that bad. It is really well located, right by the castle and not far from the train station. The room we stayed in (8... More

Hi, Thanks for choosing us for your stay! We are sorry our other guests were messy, we do try our best to keep on top of it and have asked the cleaning staff to take extra care over the kitchen area in future. The shower cubiles should all have individual locks, I will have our mantanence staff look into it.... More

Great location, couldn't fault staff either. Perfect for Students at these prices. Bit messy at times if in bigger dorms - we travelled as a group of 20+ - but expected. Security is no issue. I'd go elsewhere if you're looking for clean and quiet. Good for students or backpackers. Showers were out of order when we were there, and... More

Staying in West End

Neighborhood Profile
West End
Prevailing winds meant that most cities that grew in industrial Britain had their most desirable neighborhoods to the west – upwind of factory fumes. Edinburgh was no exception, with its wealthiest citizens settling in its West End and leaving behind grand Georgian townhouses, private gardens and genteel crescents. These backstreets remain as dignified and sleepy as ever, and most of the action here lies along the district’s busy main roads. Lothian Road connects to southern Edinburgh and harbors a vague entertainment district: three theaters and the city’s main indie cinema. All attract a select crowd, the sort who appreciate the Saturday Edinburgh’s Farmers’ Market around the corner. The West End’s other great thoroughfare, Shandwick Place, is dominated by trams trundling out to the suburbs and airport, and shoppers picking up last-minute items before hopping aboard.
