I only wish I'm able to give a 5.5 star rating, the 5 stars were for my wholly enjoyable and memorable stay the extra half star for the forward thinking clever initiatives subtly put in place by the Caledonian Backpackers management. My favourite of which being the outreach programme between the hostel and a small Eastern European village where in... More

So a group of us stayed here for 4 nights over new years and it definitely left a lot to be desired. We were supposed to be in a 38 bed dorm (which was fine cause we were a big group and took up most of the space) but they somehow managed to put an extra 2 bunk beds in... More

DON'T. I wish I could give less than one star. I have been in quite a few hostels but this one was by far the worst. There has apparently been a change in management (the new management is terrible) and the whole place was still under construction and not taking care of at all. There were sigarets on the floor... If you are looking for hostels to stay in the city centre, please please PLEASE do NOT book this hostel because it is absolutely horrible. First of all, the entrance to the hostel is creepy and it had a wooden block at the front door that almost EVERYONE who passed by almost tripped over including myself. Secondly, the rooms (basically... More

I highly NOT recommed to choose this hostel if you want to go to Edinburgh. The room and the hostel in general was very cold. I had greasy blankets and sheets with stains. For this reason I preferred to not use them and freeze all night. The floor was totally dirty. When I have arrived the room was full of... More

Please don't go here. I stayed here last weekend and it was booked through a third party. The hostel was very dirty: their was vomit in the shower when we arrived (!!!) and the rest of the bathroom also looked like it hadn't been cleaned for a while. Their was no toilet paper and no soap to wash your hands... More

The room we stayed in had a broken window, that you couldn't close. At first we did not have duvet covers or toilet paper, we got covers but no paper. The floor was covered in filth, stains and cigarette bumps. The first night we had a working radiator in our room. When we came home from a day of shopping... More

Worst hostel I've every stayed at! The whole hostel is a construction site and the toilets and showers are not cleaned! There is no toilet paper available either. The staff does not really speak English at all... I do not expect much from a hostel but clean it should be! We found cigarettes in our room and the window could... More

I would rather sleep on a park bench than stay here. This is the creepiest hostel I've ever been to. The workers are SO RUDE! They have no idea what they are doing what so ever. Felt like I was in a 40+ older men nightclub. Creepy old dudes everywhere. The music was blasting. I'm young but seriously it had... More

I was there With a group of friends. Location is really good, everything is close! Hostel itself is pretty good, good wifi in the common area, but bas in the rooms. It has soul and they are in the middle of redecorating ao you see they are trying to get to upper level. But, bathrooms are awful. Dirty, no soup,... More

Staying in West End

Neighborhood Profile
West End
Prevailing winds meant that most cities that grew in industrial Britain had their most desirable neighborhoods to the west – upwind of factory fumes. Edinburgh was no exception, with its wealthiest citizens settling in its West End and leaving behind grand Georgian townhouses, private gardens and genteel crescents. These backstreets remain as dignified and sleepy as ever, and most of the action here lies along the district’s busy main roads. Lothian Road connects to southern Edinburgh and harbors a vague entertainment district: three theaters and the city’s main indie cinema. All attract a select crowd, the sort who appreciate the Saturday Edinburgh’s Farmers’ Market around the corner. The West End’s other great thoroughfare, Shandwick Place, is dominated by trams trundling out to the suburbs and airport, and shoppers picking up last-minute items before hopping aboard.
