Location!, 10min walk to Waverley main transport hub, few minutes from the start of new tram line and up a cobbled type hill with beautiful buildings and lovely views. Inside much better than would have expected taking in rate, stylish entrance and basic small, but very clean and comfortable bedrooms with newly refurbished ensuite. Full hot breakfast available and all... More

Stayed at this hotel with Mrs, son (25) and daughter (21) for a surprise birthday treat for Mrs S. The hotel is only 5 mins taxi ride from Waverley station or you can walk it in about 15 mins. The rooms we had were very spacious and fulfilled our requirements, I shared a room with my son and in our... More

We were in Edinburgh for Hogmanay and were fortunate to have found a hotel in such a fantastic location, wonderful area! Restaurants, shopping, beautiful walks. Room was just adequate, but staff were happy to have us move across the hall to a more spacious room when it came available. If you do some looking around and depending on the time... More

Thank you for your review. Sorry you thought it was expensive, and not good value but at that time of year and at other peak times all of Edinburgh is expensive. And you would never get a hotel on princess street at the rate you paid here. It would be twice as much if not more After hogmanay our prices drop... More

The Abbey hotel is situated in a great location 10 minutes walk from Waverley station in a quiet road with Carlton hill behind. Owners and staff are very friendly and helpful and willing to please. Excellent breakfast with lots of choice. Small bedroom but adequate, warm, clean, and comfortable beds. I definitely recommend this hotel.

Great hotel with lovely views from rooms. The manager was extremely helpful & friendly & full of advice regarding the local area. We missed the breakfast slot by half an hour but they still cooked us up 5 tasty breakfasts on request which we were very grateful for! Would definitely stay again.

My friend used Booking.Com and I used Laterooms. Com and. We both came up with the Abbey Hotel. The price was good and we were welcomed with a smile when we arrived. The room was very clean and tidy. We ate in Wetherspoons nearby and once I was back in my room I discovered a very comfortable bed. The shower... More

Needed an overnight stay in Edinburgh and after a search on Laterooms.com came upon the Abbey Hotel. Had stayed here before, so knew what to expect: clean rooms, good breakfast. It's situated close to the town centre and the staff is friendly.

Staying in Broughton & Calton

Neighborhood Profile
Broughton & Calton
Lying where grandiose New Town townhouses give way to malls and utilitarian housing, Broughton and Calton have long been transitional neighborhoods with a mixed identity. It’s here that Edinburgh’s gay village found a home in the 1980s. But gay culture is anything but overt along bustling epicenter Broughton Street; even if polished pubs, hip bistros, smart delis and art galleries all speak of affluent good taste. The top of Leith Walk is more ragged. This major thoroughfare boasts a famously gritty gay club, as well as a strip of good Indian restaurants. Regal Georgian and Victorian townhouses preside over largely deserted streets in Calton, where only the occasional restaurant or hotel brings much life. Even so, a steady trickle of idlers and picnickers pass by to climb Calton Hill for its wide-open lawns, wonderful city views, and curious monuments – an Athenian-style temple among them.
