Edinburgh City Hotel rooms are larger than average, but do vary quite a lot within the hotel. Staircases are wide and there is an elevator. Rm. 311 is small and still has room for a small round table, chair, desk with chair and bed. Decoration is minimal. Linen is clean and bathroom is well appointed. Windows do open for fresh... More

This hotel is close enough to easily walk to Grassmarket and then to the Royal Mile. The rooms were bigger than most and clean and quiet. The staff was friendly and helpful. It is in a lovely historic building but updated with modern amenities.

We were very pleased with our three night stay at this hotel. The staff was helpful and friendly. The hotel room was large and tastefully decorated. Our breakfast was included with our room rate. We also enjoyed dinner one evening in the hotel restaurant. I had a beef pie that was tender and very tasty. My husband had a cod... More

Exceptionally pleased with our recent stay at the Edinburgh City Hotel. Value for money is superb, the staff are what makes this hotel stand apart from others I've stayed in recently. Friendly, always smiling and nothing is too much trouble. There's an informal feel to this place but service is second to none. The cooked breakfast is amongst one of... More

On arriving at the hotel with my group of 56 American visitors, I was sad to learn that the previous Manager, David, had moved to another hotel, promotion for him and well deserved. I need not have worried, the new Manager, Sunny, was also a very hands on leader, still with a great team of Staff, Many familiar faces, Nicola,... More

I loved this hotel. I've lived in the UK for a year and this is one of the best hotels I visited. The location is wonderful, within walking distance of city center, but not so close that it is loud with traffic outside. My room was a nice size and very clean. Would definitely stay here again.

Located in Old Town Edinburgh just a 20 min walk to Edinburgh Castle and the Royal Mile, this historical hotel makes you feel like you if you were traveling back in time, very well maintain old construction that used to be a maternity Hospital, offers large comfortable rooms and great location, I would stay here without a doubt.

The staff was excellent, then room was clean and nice. Our only complain was spotty Internet. Coming from the U.S., my phone only worked while on wifi so Internet was important. Other than that it was a great hotel.

Stayed here just after Christmas with my boyfriend and the hotel was fantastic. Good location, friendly staff and lovely clean rooms. We didn't go for breakfast in the hotel because there are so many places to eat surrounding the hotel. Edinburgh is a beautiful city with lots to do. Definitely recommend this hotel.

Staying in West End

Neighborhood Profile
West End
Prevailing winds meant that most cities that grew in industrial Britain had their most desirable neighborhoods to the west – upwind of factory fumes. Edinburgh was no exception, with its wealthiest citizens settling in its West End and leaving behind grand Georgian townhouses, private gardens and genteel crescents. These backstreets remain as dignified and sleepy as ever, and most of the action here lies along the district’s busy main roads. Lothian Road connects to southern Edinburgh and harbors a vague entertainment district: three theaters and the city’s main indie cinema. All attract a select crowd, the sort who appreciate the Saturday Edinburgh’s Farmers’ Market around the corner. The West End’s other great thoroughfare, Shandwick Place, is dominated by trams trundling out to the suburbs and airport, and shoppers picking up last-minute items before hopping aboard.
