I had the worst hotel experience here. This is nothing like a 5* hotel. The carpet was filthy, kettle not in working order, rooms didn't lock, TV was old, telephone not working, no menu in room, lounge was dark and filthy. I had to change room twice. I complained about the lock in my room which didn't get sorted for... More

My husband and I just spent three lovely days in Edinburgh which became one of our favorite cities so far. The Scotsman itself is beautiful and the rooms are a bit "older" looking and in need of refurbishment, but fit perfectly to the whole Edinburgh feeling. The bathroom in Deluxe room and the views are top notch. Dining area is... More

We spent one night at the Scotsman in June of 2015 in route to join a family reunion near Edinburgh. This lovely hotel was at one time the headquarters for The Scotsman Newspaper and the photos and other bits of memories throughout the building are beautiful. The structure itself is spectacular and the amazing crafted wood in the dining room... More

This place is quite nice. The beds were comfortable, the room and bathroom both a good size and we had view from 709 overlooking the Main Street through a picture window. Besides the bed the room was large enough to accommodate two large chairs a desk and a small sofa (w/pull out extra bed). The wifi in our room was... More

We booked a two night stay at The Scotsman Hotel, Edinburgh through Kirker- the cheapest option at the time we booked. The hotel is well-positioned, within walking distance from Waverley Station, however, negotiating the escalators with luggage is not fun and there are not enough lifts for the amount of luggage carrying sightseers travelling into Scotland’s capital city. The welcome... More

I was attending a spa day with High Tea. The spa facilities are lovely and very modern. Trying to navagoate your way there is near impossible and the reception staff were of no use. Luckily a very helpful male member of staff walked us there - two lifts and lots of random doors and corridors. My massage was lovely (Marie... More

Our first impression of this hotel was the bellman Ivor. What a great "face" of the hotel. He was enthusiastic and very willing to explain the room and whatever else you needed. If you are looking for a 5 star hotel with all the bells, whistles and pampering then this is not for you. But if you are looking for... More

We booked 2 study rooms for a special weekend. Our rooms were on 2nd and 3rd floors with views over the railway station to the Balmoral across the bridge. Both rooms were spacious with gentle touches of tweed and Scottish artwork. Amenities such as safe, mini bar and kettle all tucked away in a cupboard along with TV and decent... More

Staying in Old Town

Neighborhood Profile
Old Town
Few Edinburghers live in the Old Town, but its labyrinth of dank alleys and steep streets suggests this was not always the case. Today, it’s mostly visitors, tartan-flavored souvenir shops, and pipers that you’ll find on its cobbled streets. This is the place to get a feel for Auld Reekie (Old Smelly), as the town was once nicknamed, and stroll the Royal Mile, the thoroughfare that links the castle with the royal palace – two of Edinburgh’s great set-piece attractions. But there’s lots more exploring to do here down dozens of little alleys, or wynds, while at night the city’s busiest clubs erupt along the Cowgate which is closed to traffic for this purpose.
