I stayed at the Allison House Hotel for 4 nights within the framework of an academic conference. First, the pluses: 1. Located within an easy walk of the University of Edinburgh 2. Despite being on a busy thoroughfare (lots of buses- easy access to town), no street noise whatsoever penetrates the rooms overlooking the garden. 3. The building itself is lovely, and there are nice little touches in the rooms (the whisky decanter, tea set, extra blankets). The view of the garden and the Salisbury Crags behind is also lovely 4. Wonderful fresh fruits offered at breakfast- all different kinds of berries. 5. Free wireless access from all the rooms- a great service! 6. Excellent black-out curtains on the windows, and comfortable beds.
Now for the minuses: 1. The owners are virtually absent. Clearly, they would rather be doing anything other than running the place. The proprietor put in a brief appearance only at breakfasts. There was no way to reach him by telephone from the room; as a...
