My sister and I spent two nights here in the first week of December, 2011. Despite the distinct chill outside (snow and falling temperatures, helped by a bitter wind) we found a warm welcome and a delightful room, which was clean and beautifully presented. The shower was hot and powerful ( a real plus!!) and the beds comfortable. One teeny... More

Stayed for the one night as we had tickets for the playhouse which is literally round the corner tho the short walk back is up a very steep hill but the open fire with comfy chairs in reception was a welcome sight and the night porter "certainly" helped with providing coffee (hot chocolate apparently too technical lol ) .... What a find. We have been coming to Edinburgh for theatre visits for many years and this was the first time we have stayed in this hotel. Short walk from Waverley station and 5 minute walk downhill to Playhouse theatre. We had a lovely room on the top floor with a view of Calton Hill. Breakfast was excellent, freshly cooked... More

The room was very clean, comfortable and well furnished. The hotel itself is a short walk from the train station and from the city centre - making it ideal for us visiting for a weekend away. The hotel is quaint with a nice lobby area and an old lift system that has been kept in place to create a nice... More

This is the third time we've stayed at the Parliament House and it is still as good as our previous visits. This time I was in a twin room with my sister. The beds were comfortable, the bathroom was very well lit and provisioned and breakfast very good with a wide choice of Scottish things to try. This time we... More

Staying in Broughton & Calton

Neighborhood Profile
Broughton & Calton
Lying where grandiose New Town townhouses give way to malls and utilitarian housing, Broughton and Calton have long been transitional neighborhoods with a mixed identity. It’s here that Edinburgh’s gay village found a home in the 1980s. But gay culture is anything but overt along bustling epicenter Broughton Street; even if polished pubs, hip bistros, smart delis and art galleries all speak of affluent good taste. The top of Leith Walk is more ragged. This major thoroughfare boasts a famously gritty gay club, as well as a strip of good Indian restaurants. Regal Georgian and Victorian townhouses preside over largely deserted streets in Calton, where only the occasional restaurant or hotel brings much life. Even so, a steady trickle of idlers and picnickers pass by to climb Calton Hill for its wide-open lawns, wonderful city views, and curious monuments – an Athenian-style temple among them.
