Great Hotel with lovely staff from Concierge one of whom was Fred nice guy everybody helpful , the best pool in a hotel ever, hotel well placed for anything, people go on about car parking charge , not that bad for a city centre hotel better than paying 18-20 pound for a ncp carpark 10mins walk away, loved the Hotel... Stayed here last week for an overnight stay. Checked in at 3pm room ready. Receptionist very friendly. Double room was clean, beautifully decorated and the bathroom spotless. Coffee & tea facilities and an nespresso machine. Didn't eat in the hotel so can't comment about restaurant. Overall would visit again.

Lovely hotel, good location. Bit pricey car parking. If you reserve before it's 25quid but otherwise it's 20 (which is still pricey). Wish the staff member told me this when I asked for parking as I would not have "reserved" as there was no need.

My wife and I stayed at the Macdonald Holyrood Hotel for two nights when we visited Edinburgh in late June, 2015. The hotel is at the other end of town from the Edinburgh Castle, within a short walk of the Holyrood Palace. We had booked a room because we wanted to tour the Holyrood Palace. This plan was foiled, however,... More

I booked the Macdonald Hollyrood Hotel due to is city centre location, quality of hotel and room cost. I was impressed with this hotel's customer service and accommodation. I always pick a hotel with car-parking facilities so this accommodation ticked all the boxes. What my online booking agency didn't state on the Macdonald Hollyrood Hotel's profile is that they charged... More

Excellent hotel - good location - friendly, helpful staff - let down by poor dining experience. We spent four nights at the hotel and ate in the restaurant each night. The menu was limited with starters, mains and sweets all being 'off' at various times thus reducing options further. The only vegetarian main course was 'off' each night.

Friendly staff, lovely room and facilities. Breakfast was great, so I'd recommend paying the extra for this. The only fault is the location...just a bit too far from the town for it to be a tourist spot. It's an uphill walk too, so this needs to be taken into consideration when booking.

Stayed two nights, lower floor. Rooms were clean, bedding comfortable, and pillows nice. The bathroom was modern, with fluffy towels and nice shower products. The breakfast offered a wide variety of the usual delights. Overall the hotel was average and not really memorable. Next trip, I will avoid staying in this area of town to avoid the crowds.

We had a three night stay, which we were really looking forward to. We had fairly high expectations for a four star hotel. Our room was of a good size, although it wasn't one of the refurbished rooms. The decor was a bit old fashioned and there was a line of thick dust inside the wardrobe by the kettle. Our... More

We arrived at the hotel around lunchtime expecting just to leave our bags to go off and explore but our room was ready early which a bonus. Staff very helpful breakfast was excellent as well. Overall really good hotel with brilliant staff.

Staying in Old Town

Neighborhood Profile
Old Town
Few Edinburghers live in the Old Town, but its labyrinth of dank alleys and steep streets suggests this was not always the case. Today, it’s mostly visitors, tartan-flavored souvenir shops, and pipers that you’ll find on its cobbled streets. This is the place to get a feel for Auld Reekie (Old Smelly), as the town was once nicknamed, and stroll the Royal Mile, the thoroughfare that links the castle with the royal palace – two of Edinburgh’s great set-piece attractions. But there’s lots more exploring to do here down dozens of little alleys, or wynds, while at night the city’s busiest clubs erupt along the Cowgate which is closed to traffic for this purpose.
