This was our second stay at this hotel, the first a few years ago and I have to say that the hotel is very nice, non stuffy, very friendly and accommodating staff. The only comment I would raise regards comparison to my stay Easter 2015 compared to previous stay, is that it took over an hour for our room to... More

We've been to Crutherland (East Kilbride) several times (see separate review) and the Holyrood on recent business trips. There's a common theme, nice hotel, friendly staff but inept processes and service tending towards the chaotic, especially on arrival (missing bookings, etc). Both hotels could be great and the staff could be a lot less stressed if only the management sorted... More

Lovely spacious room with everything I would need- hairdryer, iron, ironing board, kettle, fridge. I was cold on the first night we stayed but I asked for a blanket from reception and it was perfect after that. The concierge kept our bags for us as we arrived before check in time. When we arrived at the hotel later, they were... More

A very friendly, clean, quiet hotel with a family feel. Would recommend. The staff are extremely helpful and well organised. Breakfast is good, with a great selection and choice. The rooms are spacious and clean.

I'd probably have gone for 3 1/2 out of 5 given the option. Where do I start? We got there early and they told us rooms were ready - great! We were a party of 5 so had two rooms for two nights. Our eldest daughters had a twin room on the ground floor and we had a family suite... More

This is a modern, un-Britishly spacious hotel, with big rooms, all proper amenities including a large comfortable bar downstairs, and friendly staff. Located close to the Holyroodhouse palace, it is about 20 minutes walk from the castle - basically, in the center of Old Town. I only had one night at the Macdonald Holyrood, but I will definitely consider it... More

Having stayed at this hotel a while back I would say this hotel is now a fairly average hotel in town. Housekeeping walked into our room at 8am and woke us all up despite check out being 12. The experience as a regular traveler was adequate but nothing outstanding. Hotel was clean and staff friendly. Location is good too.

Stayed here twice with husband and you kids. Nice hotel, great service, good breakfast and large well set out rooms. We almost always opt for macdonald hotels when we are traveling with the kids as they are always welcomed. Really handy for dynamic earth, Arthur's seat, Holyrood park and the parliament. Wee tip - if you can't be bothered walking... More

Just returned from two night stay with family, including kids aged 8 & 5. Reception staff and especially the concierge made us feel very welcome on arrival, we arrived a good couple of hours before check in time to drop our bags off, and we're told then when our room would be ready. We headed off in to the city... More

Staying in Old Town

Neighborhood Profile
Old Town
Few Edinburghers live in the Old Town, but its labyrinth of dank alleys and steep streets suggests this was not always the case. Today, it’s mostly visitors, tartan-flavored souvenir shops, and pipers that you’ll find on its cobbled streets. This is the place to get a feel for Auld Reekie (Old Smelly), as the town was once nicknamed, and stroll the Royal Mile, the thoroughfare that links the castle with the royal palace – two of Edinburgh’s great set-piece attractions. But there’s lots more exploring to do here down dozens of little alleys, or wynds, while at night the city’s busiest clubs erupt along the Cowgate which is closed to traffic for this purpose.
