We wanted to be in walking distance of The Esplanade (for Lionel Ritchie concert!!) and couldn't be much better placed than the Waverley end of Princes Street - entrance by Top Shop! We were upgraded to an 'executive' room (210), ie we were street side and had a view - straight onto the Citadel. The room was pretty spacious and... More

Steps from the Sir Walter Scott Monument, shopping, car rental, and trains, you won't find a better location in Edinburgh. It is old but updated for the most part. The staff are friendly and the bartenders take good care of patrons. The only negatives for us were the unbelievable construction noise during our stay, the nearly nonexistent WiFI, and the... More

Stayed for two nights and the location on Princess Street is I admit, just perfect. We checked in and were told that £25.00 would be deducted from our debit card and that after checkout it would be returned to our account in two or three days? We paid over £300.00 for two nights and two breakfasts. Our room was a... More

This was the only mistake we made during our one-week visit to Edinburgh. The tea was mediocre, like something I could've purchased at a grocery store, served in coffee cups. The sandwiches were served on store-bought bread, and the desserts were not homemade. Was so looking forward to an afternoon tea experience in Scotland and this was not the place... More

Booked this room because it was the cheapest that we found for the location. Rooms are small, there was construction right next to our room and we didn't sleep a lot..... We skipped breakfast as we wanted to stay in bed. Bed was comfortable but small.

Location is fantastic. Rooms are small. No air conditioning. No screens on windows so when you open to let cool air in, bugs get in. We had a wasp in the room. And it was very warm in there. Charming hotel, but needs upgrading. Stairs to lift heavy luggage up to the elevator. You buzz to have them bring your... More

Stayed one night, spotlessly clean, comfy bed, great view, friendly staff; central location close to bus and tram stops, would definitely stay again. Never tried the food, but the menu looked good, not suitable for people with mobility problems otherwise perfect.

My partner and I recently stayed at the Old Waverley Hotel in Edinburgh on a trip to see the British Open at St. Andrew's. We found the hotel to be perfect for both of us for several reasons. The location on Princes Street is very convenient. It gave me easy access to Waverley Station for the daily train to Leuchars,... More

Came here for my 21st birthday with my fiancé, the room was small and lacked facilities such as a wardrobe but we loved it, very clean & tidy. Amazing view of the high street and a very short walk to most attractions. Breakfast was nice yet very simple. Cant wait to go again.

My sister and I stayed here for two nights. The hotel is very central and within easy walking for Edinburgh's central attractions and buses stopped close to the hotel and ran very frequently. We had a side room on the first floor which was kept very clean and comfortable. The only downside was the noise from the traffic and revellers... More

Staying in Princes Street and Gardens

Neighborhood Profile
Princes Street and Gardens
Glaswegians tease Edinburghers that their High Street is only half one, since buildings only line one side. But what they don’t say is how extraordinary the views are from Princes Street as a result. From here you look onto expansive and decorative public gardens beneath the mighty basalt cliffs on which Edinburgh’s Castle stands proud above the rest of the dramatic old town skyline. Yet many of those on Princes Street look the other way, as they’re concerned with chain store shopping or catching the tram or a train at main train station Waverley. But it’s not all utility here; the Scottish National Gallery rewards purposeless wandering, and December’s huge winter market in the gardens begins a season of revelry which ends with Hogmanay, Britain’s largest New Year’s street party.
