Me and my boyfriend booked this hotel and it was lovely! Only a 5 minute walk to the main streets. Despite reading the bad reviews about re-decorating and building disturbances going on, when we arrived the work had been finished. The Continental breakfast had a great selection, and all of the staff from reception to waitresses were very friendly and... More

I booked this for a one night stay whilst attending a function. As I wasn't intending to use any hotel facilities or to spend any waking time in the hotel I didn't want to pay too much. This hotel was priced well below what other hotels in the area were charging so I booked. It's situated just off the centre... More

The Ballantrae is an average hotel. Clean and neat, as it appears to be just re-furbished. However, the rooms are either one or two floors above or below the reception (entrance) area, and this can be a pain if you have to carry the luggage. The reception too is a just a desk at the entrance. The rooms below are... More

Thank you for your review. The hotel has indeed just been refurbished, with the reception the last section to be finished in the very near future. For guests who request extra lighting, more lamps can be brought to your room by contacting reception. As a listed building, we do not have lifts, but allocate rooms on a low floor when... More

I stayed in Double room, which is huge space with shower and bathtub. The bed was comformtable and the space was large. Perfectly fine for me, no trouble found. The location was also great, 10 minute walk to New town and Train station. Staff service was top-class, i had great service from staff, very polite, professional, and helpful. Overall, I... More

Stayed here for one night on a flying visit. What a great find. Good location. Lovely clean rooms. Really friendly staff. Got a room upgrade as soon as I arrived. Lovely continental breakfast with newspapers too. This will be my usual hotel from now on.

Stayed here for business leisure for 2nights from Thurs 30/04. Called hotel day before check in due to query users reviews from tripadviser and finalise stay; informed room is standard double refurb, on ground floor. Upon check in met by a bubbly and very informative front office staff; made me feel welcome and the room was above expectations; clean modern... More

Perfect location in the heart of Edinburgh. I can highly recommend this hotel, short walk to to centre, very nice rooms, friendly staff and on site parking is worth the extra charge for the location. Bar and restaurant look very nice although we ate at the Dome which is a must see.

I stayed here with my mum last November and it was quite a last minute thing, but no regrets about booking. We were upgraded on arrival, as they were refurbishing a lot of rooms, and got a MASSIVE family room, with a king sized bed EACH; it was brilliant. The building is beautifully decorated and very warm and welcoming. It's... More

I stayed here for one night (20th April) and I have to say it was one of the most pleasant places I've experienced. When I arrived I was given a single room. Really nice, but I asked if it would be possible to get a room with a double bed. No problem - I was given a free upgrade. The... More

Staying in Broughton & Calton

Neighborhood Profile
Broughton & Calton
Lying where grandiose New Town townhouses give way to malls and utilitarian housing, Broughton and Calton have long been transitional neighborhoods with a mixed identity. It’s here that Edinburgh’s gay village found a home in the 1980s. But gay culture is anything but overt along bustling epicenter Broughton Street; even if polished pubs, hip bistros, smart delis and art galleries all speak of affluent good taste. The top of Leith Walk is more ragged. This major thoroughfare boasts a famously gritty gay club, as well as a strip of good Indian restaurants. Regal Georgian and Victorian townhouses preside over largely deserted streets in Calton, where only the occasional restaurant or hotel brings much life. Even so, a steady trickle of idlers and picnickers pass by to climb Calton Hill for its wide-open lawns, wonderful city views, and curious monuments – an Athenian-style temple among them.
